I’m an attachment-based therapist, which means I believe that relationships—past and present—shape how we see ourselves and others. Whether you're an adolescent navigating the complexity of growing up, or an adult facing life’s challenges, I’m here to support you in understanding your experiences and how they’ve shaped your emotional world. I take a holistic approach to therapy, honoring the spiritual aspects of life while also grounding our work in compassion and connection. I understand that everyone’s story is unique, and I bring cultural sensitivity to my work to ensure that your background, identity, and lived experience are respected in our sessions. If you're dealing with anxiety, grief, trauma, or any other emotional or life challenge, I’ll work with you to unpack those feelings in a safe, supportive space. I use a blend of therapeutic approaches, including psychodynamic therapy and EMDR, tailored to what’s most helpful for you. Our work together is rooted in creating a space where you feel seen, heard, and empowered to make meaningful changes. My goal is simple: to help you explore your emotions, gain insight into what’s going on inside, and discover or rediscover your strengths. I want you to walk away from each session feeling a little more grounded, a little more whole, and confident in your ability to heal and grow. I work well with people who are ready to do the work—whether that’s unpacking painful past experiences or making sense of current struggles. You might be someone who is struggling with anxiety, grief, loss, or the effects of trauma. You might be looking for clarity in your relationships, or searching for more self-understanding and self-worth. Whatever you’re going through, I’m here to help guide you through it with care, respect, and patience.

You might be at a turning point—drained by people or work, cut off from the sense of purpose that used to guide you, or trying to make sense of a major life change. You may feel anxious, a bit obsessive at times, or weighed down by depression or habits that keep you stuck. Maybe you’ve built a life that looks fine on the surface but feels misaligned underneath. You might catch yourself wondering why you can’t just feel better despite all your effort, knowing that more of the same “success” won’t make you happy. These are the kinds of crossroads I help people navigate. I’m a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Sacramento, California, providing emotional and behavioral support to individuals facing personal and professional challenges, and moving through major life transitions. Years in community mental health and residential treatment taught me how to support people through recovery from addiction, trauma, and complex mental health challenges. Before that, I spent 15 years in the arts and culture field and non-profit sector in Washington, D.C.—work that exposed me to the pressures, expectations, and burnout that high-performing professionals often carry. These experiences shape how I understand the worlds my clients move through and the weight they’re trying to set down.

Hello potential clients! I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist based in Sacramento, CA. My naturally altruistic personality has led me to a career I love. Whether you are experiencing difficulty understanding and experiencing your emotions or if you simply don't understand why you are seeking help and would like help defining your need, kudos to you for taking the first step to seek support. I have experience in facilitating positive change and helping clients discover and live in their authentic selves. It is amazing how this form of support alleviates symptoms perpetuated by anxiety, depression, anger, unresolved trauma, relationship issues, gender, sexual preferences, racial tensions, life stage changes and other stressors. It is very important, for me, that we develop a positive therapuetic relationship on a strong foundation rooted in honesty and trust. I advocate for self-empowerment within my clients helping them discover the power, strength, and control they hold within themselves. In return, I ask for commitment to the work so we can operate as a successful team.

My approach draws on psychoanalytic thinking, which revolves on one central idea: much of what we think and feel remains outside of our awareness. Sometimes we keep powerful feelings hidden so we can continue moving through the day, or we simply cannot find time to reflect on everything that is happening to us. In any case, keeping these potent experiences hidden may leave us feeling stiff, dreary, unfulfilled, or even numb and dull.

Reaching out for help can be a very vulnerable experience, but also a great attribute of strength and resilience. I work with individuals who have experienced trauma in their life. Whether it's from childhood neglect, sexual assault, natural disaster, sudden death or other life circumstances. Trauma often creates patterns and loops that extend into many areas of a person's life, and can be challenging and painful to navigate. Sometimes the way people survive their trauma brings them more pain, adds to the chaos, and reinforces negative beliefs that perpetuate the cycle. I work to empower clients to understand and alter unhealthy cycles to strengthen and better their lives. I am fluent in ASL American Sign Language and have worked with Deaf clients leaving domestic violence in both a shelter and outpatient therapy services. I have spent 2 years in correctional settings working with severely mentally ill patients and supporting their family members navigating having children with mental illness. I have also spent 2 years working with foster youth and foster parents in providing support to their placements, promoting healing and preserving relationships. Note that online scheduling is limited. Broader scheduling options will be available to regularly scheduling clients. Please also note that I do not provide opinions about disability or fitness to return to work or other activities for clients who are not well-established at the time that the request for such opinion is made.

I work with individuals seeking meaningful change, greater clarity, and a stronger sense of self. My approach is grounded in warmth, empathy, and the ability to meet clients where they are—supporting them in feeling seen, understood, and empowered as they navigate life’s challenges. My work is informed by more than 60 years of life experience, both professional and personal, which brings depth, perspective, and authenticity to the therapeutic process. After several careers and at age 50—supported by ten years of sobriety—I felt called to create a more fulfilling and intentional life. Through my own work in therapy and career counseling, I chose to return to school and build the life and practice I have today. This journey continues to shape my compassion, insight, and respect for the courage it takes to pursue growth and healing. I earned both my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Santa Clara University in California. In alignment with California requirements for licensure as a Marriage and Family Therapist, I completed 3,000 supervised clinical internship hours at Almaden Valley Counseling Agency in San Jose, where I worked with individuals, couples, families, and children. This experience strengthened my ability to work across the lifespan and address a wide range of personal, relational, and emotional concerns.

I don’t come to this work believing that life is easy or that growth happens without struggle—I’ve been through hard times myself, and those experiences shape the way I show up for my clients: with empathy, humility, and respect for how tough life can be. My approach is collaborative, compassionate, and grounded in evidence-based care. I draw from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and trauma-informed practices to help clients better understand their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors while building practical skills for everyday life. I work at your pace, honoring your story and your strengths, not just your symptoms. I work with individuals, teens, and families experiencing emotional distress related to eating disorders, trauma, grief and loss, addiction, suicidal thoughts, relationship challenges, and family disturbances. Whether you’re feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or emotionally exhausted, I aim to help you make sense of what you’re experiencing and find steadier ground. Therapy with me is not about “fixing” you. It’s about helping you reconnect with your resilience, learn new ways to cope, and create a life that feels more balanced, authentic, and aligned with who you are. You don’t have to do this alone—I’d be honored to walk alongside you in your healing journey.

I’m so glad you’re here. My name is Jennifer Yates, and I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with over 25 years of experience in the mental health field and 17 years as a licensed clinician. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a Master’s degree in Counseling, and I’ve been trained in five evidence-based therapeutic approaches. I believe therapy works best when clients feel truly seen, respected, and met exactly where they are—without pressure or judgment. I strive to create a warm, welcoming, and supportive environment where you can show up as your authentic self. While my work is grounded in evidence-based practices, I also take a holistic approach, recognizing the connection between mind, body, emotions, relationships, and life experiences. I bring not only clinical expertise, but also genuine compassion, relatability, and an appropriate sense of humor into the therapy space. Healing doesn’t always have to feel heavy, and moments of lightness can be an important part of growth. My passion is to walk alongside you as a guide and support—helping you build insight, resilience, and meaningful change at a pace that feels right for you. Scheduling & Attendance Policy To ensure consistency of care, missed appointments or late cancellations (within 24 hours of the scheduled session) will result in a $75 fee. Hello. My name is Ana and I am a bilingual Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (128445), in the beautiful state of California. I have been in the counseling and social work field for 25+ yrs. Simply stated, I was born to do therapy, it is a gift and an honor. I am a safe, trusting and caring person, that is able to connect with a diversity of people, especially those that feel inadequate. I have worked with children, teens, elderly, foster care, gang members and most recently, death row inmates in prison. I have found through many of those experiences that emotional pain, feeling alone, being scared to live and having anxiety or depression is common and universal. However, I also know that the desire to live a deeper, peaceful and meaningful life can also be a driving force. I too have done much of that internal work and reflection in my life. I have learned that it is OK to be just me, no longer fearing to live the life that I have earned and deserve. I would love the same for you.

Frequently asked questions

Why filter by California rather than a city like LA?

When looking for online therapy, you can see anyone that is credentialed in California. We want you to find the best fit, therefore, Grow Therapy shows available therapists across California from San Francisco to San Diego! If you’d rather see someone in-person, you can change the filter from virtual and find a therapist near you in California.

Will my therapist take Centivo?

Yes! If you use Centivo you’ll be asked to verify your Member ID at the time you book the appointment. However, if you don’t have Centivo you can select cash. Our therapists will have their cost of appointment on their profile. Individual session costs will vary.

How does the Specialty Filter work? Can I find a therapist that focuses on a specific issue?

The specialty filter is optional. You don’t need to check any boxes to see a provider. However, fit is very important when selecting an online therapist. If you have knowledge or experience to recognize what specialties you may need.

Why use Gender, Age, and Identities filters?

Finding a provider with a similar life experience can be beneficial because it can be easier to establish rapport and potentially be understood quicker and clearer.

What happens during the first therapy session?

Your first therapy session is for you and your therapist to meet each other and to ask any questions that you have about the counseling process. This is where you can expect your therapist to do the same as they will ask questions to gain insight into your specific situation. In this first session the therapist is doing their part to gather as much information so they can better assess if they are able to meet your therapeutic needs. Depending upon your provider's specialty, you may also discuss the methods the therapist will use. For additional information on therapy methods, please visit the Grow Therapy Help Center. Some people feel nervous before their first appointment, and that is totally normal! Coming prepared with a list of questions for your therapist may help. Remember, you're taking a brave step by seeking therapy, and it is okay to be nervous as you try something new.
