LCSW-C, 30 years of experience
My name is Cheryl Torpey, licensed LCSW-C in Maryland and I have been a psychotherapist for 30 years. in that time I have worked with early childhood trauma, sexual abuse, PTSD, grief, anxiety/depression, spirituality and have done extensive work with veterans and the unique challenges they have. My desire is to assist each person I work with in gaining tools, strengthening relationships and reaching their goals to become all they choose to be.
Our first session will be you learning about me so you feel comfortable and talking about what is bringing you to counseling in a way that is safe for you. Together we can work on a plan to help you accomplish your goals for therapy and our partnership together. It is a time of fact finding and feel free to ask any questions you may have to help me know better how I can serve you.
I can bring a combination of qualities to our sessions together. I am a person of faith and respectful of where you are in your life. I bring both empathy and experience to all kinds of things you may have experienced or are experiencing. I have worked many years with abuse and trauma and can offer you freedom from the pain. I have extensive work with Veterans and their families and know the many unique issues you may be struggling with from MST, benefits, service connected conditions and can help with navigating the VA system.
I am committed to assisting adults who come to therapy wanting to be a better version of themselves but are seeking healthy ways to accomplish it. Many struggle with past pain and trauma, whether it be thru abuse, veterans of war, or first responders and my focus is to help others not only to be survivors of what they have experienced but the be resilient and victorious.
Over the years I have found several practices beneficial to help the client reach their goals. Incorporating their faith beliefs, attachment issues, how their thinking affects their behaviors and feelings with CBT and DBT techniques. I also work with trauma-focused therapy and psychodynamic therapy.
