I am Dr. Abimbola Adetola, a doctorally prepared Nurse Practitioner (DNP) who holds double board certifications in psychiatric/mental health and family nursing. As an empathetic and compassionate practitioner, I create a safe and open environment for my clients, fostering a collaborative and informed approach to their health care. With over a decade of extensive experience in the healthcare field, I have had the privilege of working with clients from diverse backgrounds, ages, and cultures. My expertise include diagnosing and treating psychiatric and mental health conditions. My treatment approach is holistic and patient-centered, offering comprehensive assessment and psychiatric evaluations, medication management, and supportive talk therapy.
Prior to your scheduled appointment, you should have been completed all forms at most the day before your appointment. Immediately before our first session, there will be a 10-minute complimentary pre-consultation phone call to we see if we are a good-fit. So, when you schedule the first time, make sure you are available at your number on file 10 minutes prior to your scheduled time. Please note that you would not have to pay for the 10-minute pre-consult phone call. If the client is a minor, I will need to speak with their parent/guardian. During our first session after ascertaining we are a good fit, we'll start with brief introductions and you will communicate what your concerns are and any stressors you might be facing. I will conduct a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation to carefully assess your mental health which will include discussing your current symptoms, psychiatric and medical histories and past hospitalizations and treatment. I will collaborate with you to develop a systematic and individualized treatment plan specific to your needs, which may include use of medication when indicated. Additionally, I may integrate brief supportive therapy to help you develop coping strategies to manage your symptoms effectively.
I connect well with children, adolescents and adults in a non-judgmental environment that promotes open discussions about their health concerns, tailoring each session to meet your unique needs. I am an empathetic and compassionate practitioner who empowers individuals through their journey to recovery and promotes active participation in their care. I take a holistic, patient-centered approach to care—offering comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, individualized medication management, and supportive talk therapy. Having been a patient who struggled with back pain for years after a MVA, I understand patients’ lived experiences of pain from both medical and mental health conditions. Through active listening, I deliver patient-centered, trauma-informed care, premised on an evidence-based approach, to achieve the best treatment outcomes. I engage in continuing education to enhance my skills and knowledge through attending conferences about emerging treatments in psychiatric care.
I am positioned to serve individuals of diverse backgrounds who are open to establishing a therapeutic relationship and are motivated to engage collaboratively in their mental health journey. I work best with clients who are eager to take an active role in improving their well-being through open communication, shared goals, and mutual trust. I am committed to helping individuals with clinical depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorders, psychosis, ADHD, OCD, PTSD, opioid use disorders, and various other mental health and wellness issues. My goal is to provide a safe, compassionate space where clients feel heard, empowered, and supported throughout their healing process.
I use CBT to help clients recognize, challenge, and change maladaptive thought patterns in order to change their responses to difficult situations. Through the use of CBT, their behavior is managed by changing how they think and feel with the goal to help resolve present-day challenges like depression or anxiety, relationship problems, anger issues, stress, or other common concerns that negatively affect mental health and quality of life.
Cultural contexts are respected and factored into treatment method based on the understanding that one's cultural background race and ethnicity, identities, beliefs, and experiences inform behavior. It is hoped that through the use of Culturally Sensitive Therapy, clients are provided the most effective and individualized treatment where they feel heard, understood, and empowered to achieve their mental health goals.
Through the use of talk therapy, I engage my clients to do most of the talking as I listen without judgement. This journey of self- discovery will help clients to uncover what hurts and what is needed to repair it and ultimately, they are able to find the best solutions for themselves and thereby, make appropriate changes.
With an understanding of how difficult it is to make changes in life, I incorporate Motivational Interviewing to help clients resolve ambivalent feelings and insecurities to help them find the internal motivation they need to change their behavior.
I engage clients with the assumption that people have the strength, wisdom, experience, and resilience to effect change. Stemming from the understanding that clients know what they need to do to improve their lives, they are coached, questioned and encouraged to set goals resulting in them finding the best solutions to their challenging situations. I find SFBT effective for behavioral problems in children and adolescents and parents are encouraged to identify and amplify what worked in the past when their children exhibited good behavior. Likewise, other individuals are helped to recognize the virtues and strengths that previously got them through hard times which will likely work in the future. This approach helps clients to focus on what they can do, rather than what they can’t do. This modality is applicable to relationship problems, family dysfunction, domestic or child abuse and addiction.
