Psychotherapy can help you overcome many personal challenges, if you're willing to be honest and have an idea of how you'd like your life to be different. I've been a therapist for many years, working with diverse persons in New York and California. I use a variety of modalities including classic insight-oriented therapy, supportive therapy, CBT techniques, and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). I also work with couples and families.
The first session is an assessment during which I will be asking you some questions about your history, prior treatment (if any) and your symptoms. At the end of the session I will tell you my recommendations, and you will have an opportunity to ask questions.
Individual therapy may be a combination of insight-oriented (also called psychodynamic or psychoanalytic) therapy, supportive therapy, CBT techniques, and/or DBT techniques, depending on the individual. I am also certified in EMDR but prefer to use that technique with patients whom I've gotten to know over a couple of months. I also enjoy doing family and couples therapy, if those modalities are appropriate.
I work best with patients who understand that therapy is a collaboration between the patient and therapist. Because I am trained in insight-oriented therapy and EMDR, we may be able to get to the deep roots of your problems. On the other hand, some patients just want someone with whom to talk through a crisis. I've always been a good listener and genuinely interested in other people.
I work with adults ages 18 to 70 who are experiencing symptoms or life challenges.
