Jean Janssen
Hello, I am Jean, LCSW. I strive to provide a warm and empathetic environment. I find value in both validation and understanding, while also focusing on growth and development. I believe in the power of therapeutic relationships. I am trauma informed provider, and I utilize Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and Solution Focused Therapy. I have provided services to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities with co-occurring serious and persistent mental illness for over 6 years.
First session
Our first meeting will be a space for us to get to know each other. This is your time to let me know what motivates you to participate in therapy. I will also have some questions. I will ask about your strengths, areas of life you are looking to grow within and what activities you enjoy. I find value is knowing about your home life, work life, and social life. I will also ask about any history of trauma; this will allow me to be mindful about integrating or appropriately avoiding trauma reminders during treatment. The first meeting is your time to set the tone for ongoing meetings.
Strengths
I have worked in crisis intervention for 7 years. This experience has helped me find my therapeutic style - I am genuine and often use my personality in the therapeutic space. I will take the time to understand you (your choices thoughts and actions) - I will cheerlead you when you're making healthy-for-you-choices - and I will gently encourage you to find areas of growth and different choices, thoughts and actions in areas of life that are no longer serving you. I believe in the power of the therapeutic space and create an environment that allows for individuals to try new communication styles or social interactions while providing honest feedback.
Ideal clients
My ideal client is someone who is ready for change, or someone who is exploring readiness for change. I think honest communication is important in the therapeutic process; please know you can be honest with me and provide feedback that will allow for a better therapeutic relationship. I am here to provide support through relationship challenges, substance abuse, life changes, and loss.
Treatment methods
Acceptance and commitment (ACT)
Sometimes we experience thoughts that are not helpful or even harmful. Learning to live a meaningful life and giving less power to those thoughts can allow us to focus on what is important to us.
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
Exploring our thoughts, feelings and behaviors is important in understanding ourselves. We can honor our thoughts and feelings while making behavioral changes that will improve our lives.
Dialectical Behavior (DBT)
The actions we take can have huge impacts on our lives. I like to use DBT to complete chain analysis of experiences we have had and identify what actions honor us and where we might make changes to be more aligned with our values. I find value in dialects - the understanding that two things can be true at the same time.
Motivational Interviewing
I only use motivational interviewing when indicated. Motivational interviewing is helpful when someone is engaging in behaviors that are not healthy or in alignment with their core beliefs. Sometimes we need to focus on why we are making changes and MI is helpful.
Solution-Focused Brief Treatment
Sometimes we need someone to talk out a problem with and find a solution. Choices are sometimes best made when talking out loud with a trusted human.
