I am a licensed professional counselor in Virginia with 12 years of professional work experience. I hold a BA in psychology, MA in clinical psychology, MA in educational leadership, PhD in counselor education and supervision, and a DBA with a focus in management.
When I work with clients, listening to understand instead of hearing to respond is a priority. I believe it is imperative that I develop a sound understanding of my client's subjective worldview to meet them where they are and disrupt maladaptive thoughts and patterns of behavior. My objective is to collaborate with my clients in order to help them identify, address, and resolve matters that reinforce and/or contribute to their presenting concern(s).
I have experience in helping clients with relationship issues, trauma and abuse, & motivation, self-esteem, and confidence, anxiety, adjustment issues, college and career readiness, couples, depression, family dynamics, gender identity, identity development, LGBT+, non-traditional relationships, men's issues.
In our work together, I work with my clients to create an open and safe environment where thoughts and feelings can be shared without fear of judgment. Taking the first step to sign up for therapy can take courage and I am proud of you for getting started!

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in the State of Virginia and Georgia. I have been practicing in the mental health field since 2002 when I earned my master’s degree from the University of Dayton. I have honed my skills in a variety of settings, such as schools, hospitals, residential facilities, community programs, and in private practice.
I enjoy listening and helping. I believe in the power of “talk therapy.” I once read a quote that says, “What a curious power words have.” This quote suggests that “talk therapy” works and I believe that wholeheartedly. I understand that “Hurt People, Hurt People,” so let’s begin the healing process. When you are hurting you might intentionally or unintentionally hurt people, and relationships with people are vital. I can help you develop healthy relationships and improve relationships with family, friends, and co-workers.
I would love to help you learn and utilize skills that will be a tremendous help during troubling times. I have extensive experience working with adults and children to develop a wide range of skills, such as coping, communication, relaxation, and anger management skills, to name a few. Additionally, I can help families develop strategies to navigate the pressures and difficulties of parenting children who have been diagnosed with various mental health diagnoses.
In addition, I can assist you with gaining insight about your actions, by processing your thoughts and feelings. All of us human beings at one time or another have reacted based on our thoughts and feelings, and the results have not been favorable. Let’s talk about how your thoughts, feelings, and actions are connected. By using a Cognitive Behavioral approach to therapy, I can help you become aware of inaccurate or negative thinking, which is often referred to as Cognitive Distortions. By doing this you will be able to view difficult situations differently and therefore respond and react more effectively.
Another passion of mine is Marriage and Couple Therapies, as well as Premarital Counseling. Our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors inevitably affect our relationships. Individuals in families and marriages often operate from a place of comfort and familiarity, which can be detrimental. Allow me to help your marriage and family become what you desire. Couple’s Therapy is unique, and I can help you navigate the difficulties that tend to be specific to couples. Many times, individuals reactively come to therapy, but I approach Premarital Counseling in a proactive manner. Let’s create the foundation for a healthy marriage and healthy relationships.
I understand that a lot of us are busy with work, family, extracurricular activities, and many other obligations, so in many cases I use Solution Focused Brief Therapy. Many people believe that therapy only consists of talking about problems, but in Solution Focused Brief Therapy I will work with you to identify positive resources and assist you with implementing concrete strategies to change your outlook and future!

I'm a veteran counselor with over 30 years in the field. I went back to. school at age 30 after staying home for 8 years with my children. I loved both worlds-college and being a mom; somehow it all worked out. I have had a long and varied career. I started out at a Woman's resource center which focused on helping women get back into the workforce (this was long ago), I worked at a Family Service Agency where I served a diverse population from children to the more mature folks. I then did double time between the local emergency room and my private practice.
As my mom aged, I found it necessary to make changes to I went to work part-time at two local colleges, such a different experience but I enjoyed that population. My mom has passed, and I am definitely "retirement age" but I'm not ready to give up counseling, I truly love helping others.
I am very passionate about empowering folks so that they may be able to navigate life's challenges.
I had a therapist tell me some time ago, you can never take a client where you have not been. I have explored my own issues at length.

Bio
My name is Melissa and I am an LPC in the State of Virginia. I am passionate about mental health, healing, and hope. Understanding your mental health and what is going on with you is the starting point on your healing journey.
I grew up in Seattle Washington (Go Seahawks!) and attended college in Portland Oregon. I received my Master’s in Professional Counseling through Liberty University in 2016. I have lived in rural southwest Virginia for the past 14 years. I am a single mom with four kids. I love laughing, playing games, reading, watching sports, and spending time with my children and my small circle of people.
I grew up in an alcoholic family system and credit Jesus with keeping me away from addiction and dysfunction in my life.
I have worked as a counselor for 7 years and have worked with children, adolescents, and adults with various diagnoses and in a variety of settings such as intensive in-home, school based, addiction/recovery, outpatient, and supervisory roles. Counseling needs to be a safe place and a counselor needs to be a person who can handle talking about the tough stuff. Counseling is not polite conversation. I begin the counseling relationship with developing emotional safety, educating clients about mental health and creating a better understanding of what is going on with them, processing their experiences, and developing a "toolbox" to help them improve their lives. I focus on emotions- why we have them, how to sit with them, and how to manage them. I believe that "the only way out is through" and that to tackle struggles, a comprehensive approach is needed to look at family history, family dynamics, biological issues, psychological issues, cultural influences, medical history, social influences, spiritual influences, and current level of functioning. I use all of these factors to create a comprehensive assessment to aid me in developing an individualized treatment plan to ensure that you receive the best care possible.
I enjoy networking with entities in the community such as social services, schools, and churches. I enjoy providing supervision to other counselors and providing education about mental. I focus largely on Family Systems, emotions, thoughts, self-talk. I provide marriage counseling, trauma informed care, and provide counseling to individuals struggling with anxiety, depression, adjustment disorders, ADHD, social functioning, adult children of alcoholics, divorce, grief, and addiction/recovery. I am able to implement a Christian world view to those who desire this as an aspect of their treatment.

My counseling experience includes treating adolescents, adults, and couples. My practice is highly individualized to address common symptoms associated with anxiety, depression, and relationship issues. I treat my clients as unique individuals with their distinctive concerns impacting their lives. I greatly honor the trust I am given by them and will help them navigate difficult times and unexpected life changes. I believe the decision to start the journey toward healing and reconciliation demonstrates a great deal of courage and resolve. Together we can discern a path toward a more balanced and joyful life. Emotional/spiritual growth and symptom reduction are the primary focus of practice.
I accomplish this by helping clients understand how their internal life is interacting with outside stressors causing discomfort and impeding growth. I also endeavor to help clients recognize destructive patterns in personal relationships that may be keeping them from further healing. In addition to private practice experience, I also have pastoral/spiritual counseling experience.

Hi there, I'm Asha. I'm both a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) as well as certified in perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMH-C). I am currently accepting clients for teletherapy sessions where I provide EMDR and psychotherapy. Thank you for taking the time to learn about me, as well as considering if I am the therapist for you! If you take anything away from my profile, let it be to always remember you are worthy.
Do you feel pulled in a million directions by the stress of daily life events, overstimulated by multiple hats you wear throughout the day at home, work, with your children, partner, family and/or friend relationships? Perhaps you are struggling to cope with the effects of childhood and/or perinatal trauma you have experienced. Are you a current or expectant parent unsure how to cope with previously diagnosed or new onset depression, anxiety, or other mood disorders? Are you simply having difficulty putting yourself first but know deep inside it is time to make that change?
I am ready to be a part of your support network. Together, we can identify what it is standing in your way of a better tomorrow. Let's work together to process what it is you have gone through or are experiencing in this moment. Let me help you gather the resources you need to begin coping positively. I am here to help you begin your journey, whether that means reprocessing trauma through a healing lens, coping positively with any mental health symptoms you are experiencing, and/or helping you to develop a plan towards a better tomorrow. Perhaps you have found my profile searching for guidance through perinatal mental health-I am ready to be your guiding light! Living and experiencing positive life events while coping with a mental health disorder is possible, as is finding peace within the chaos. Let me help you refocus, heal and feel supported while doing so!
Seeking therapy can feel scary. Many people end up choosing to actively avoid their past trauma, their daily stressors and their fears while continuing to struggle daily through the symptoms, unable to truly manage. I want you to know that by choosing to no longer avoid; to finally put yourself first, you are making the right choice. I am very big on reminding my clients that to care for others as parents, caregivers, and all other roles we take on, we must first care for ourselves. You've probably heard the statement "You can't pour from an empty cup". Let's add to your cup.
You deserve a safe space to heal and grow. You deserve a clinician who is ready to listen to understand, sit by your side while you go through the process of therapy and most of all, you deserve to discover your peace. In our sessions together, I'll meet you with compassion and evidence-based techniques so you can overcome the symptoms you are experiencing and find yourself again. I am waiting on you; let's work together!
