Well hello! I'm Rachael and I've been a therapist for about 15 years. I've formerly worked with higher level of care folks with agencies, meaning I've worked with the severely mentally ill folks and people who need a lot of support in crisis. As I get older, I'm working my way to lower level of care so I can spend more time with my family. I have my private practice now and I really enjoy working mostly with teens and young adults (18-25). I also get stoked about working with the neurodiverse folks and adults around religious trauma. I'm happy to provide support in my office face to face or via telehealth.
So it's really likely that you're nervous so I will try to keep it fun and comfortable and we will get to know each other. You will find that my personality is super real. I like to swear, keep it real, and encourage you to just be yourself. If you can't be your true self with your therapist than where can you? Right? We will complete an initial assessment with lots of questions but we will go at your pace and to your comfort level. You can play with a fidget or play music, color, whatever makes you feel comfortable.
I think my ability to connect with people in a human way and just be genuine is my strength. I'm genuinely doing this because I like people and I want to support and understand the human experience. I want to see people improve their lives and not just live, survive but truly thrive.
I love the young folks who are open to support and eager to learn skills. I love working with families too and stoked to bring in parents, siblings, any support people to work on communication. I get really excited to work with the 18-21 age folks who are transitioning to adulthood and work with them on that transition to college, work, moving out of the home, etc.
I'm a huge believer in the attachment theory and that the first five years of life have a huge impact on the development of a person's brain and development. I ask a lot of questions around your first five years of life in your initial assessment.
I think most people are familiar with CBT so this probably doesn't come as much of a surprise that I use CBT skills. These come in handy to replace thinking patterns that you have gotten used to or familiar with that are no longer working for. We will work to replace your negative thinking patterns with positive ones.
This is one of my personal favorite treatment modalities to use with teens and young adults because the majority of folks are struggling with emotion regulation. It's so important to learn how to identify your emotions (name them), sit with them (observe without judgement), and learn how to have compassion and be truly comfortable regulating them and not so impulsive.
