Margot Troutt Keys

LCSW (she/her)25 years of experience

The stigma behind psychotherapy is based on the notion that somehow asking for help and working with a professional means that one is weak. Ironically, this notion could not be further from the truth. Making the decision to look at your story and exploring how patterns within it have impacted your goals, relationships, losses, parenting, work and outlook is profoundly difficult to do. It is looking at ourselves with the commitment to not look away. Through therapy we develop tools to magnify our strengths and address our challenges, offering a path that enables us to look at ourselves and feel pride, hope, and empowerment. If you are someone that will summon up the courage to look at your life in ways that don’t always feel good in order to move forward in your life, I invite you to join me in accepting and embracing the you that you have always wanted to be. I specialize in work with adolescents, young adults and adults dealing with anxiety, depression, trauma, PTSD, self-injurious behavior, and suicidal ideation, ADHD, among other issues. My work relies most heavily on Psycho-dynamic Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral informed therapy, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Despite my belief that therapy is hard work, I strive to provide an environment that is warm yet direct, and offers a strong sense of safety and good humor as appropriate. Life is many things, right? And funny is sometimes one of them.

First session

The first few sessions of our work will involve us getting to know each other, and your telling me what brought you to therapy and what you would like to get out of it. I will ask you questions, about your life and the meanings you have drawn from it. We will then focus on goals you would like to achieve during our work together, and we will use them as our guide. As we explore your life, your goals, and your hopes, I will listen, share observations, and address patterns that appear. We will then work together to modify or change these patterns in a way that positively impacts your experience as opposed to getting in your way. If you are looking for someone who will simply listen and be a blank slate, I am not the therapist for you. However, if you want to see a therapist who does not check her own humanity at the door, you have just found one. I work through warmth, laughter, and good humor to gently pave the way for difficult work to be explored while encouraging clients to confront uncomfortable truths and giving them the tools to address them effectively.

Strengths

My greatest strengths are in work with those who are dealing with depression, anxiety, self-esteem issues, and the myriad issues that arise for college students as they work diligently to becoming successful adults. I also specialize in parenting issues, relationship concerns, and those who engage in self-harm. Additionally, I work to help those with ADHD, or are parents of a child with ADHD to effectively manage the aspects of the diagnosis that frequently get in their way. Lastly, as an African-American woman, I care deeply and work successfully in addressing issues related to "the otherness" so many people of color, immigrant and LGBTQIA communities are confronted with.

Ideal clients

College students, people of color coping with trauma, women coping with trauma, depression and anxiety, and adults struggling with ADHD in themselves or their children.
