Hi there! Let's reflect together on your ability to take the first step towards realizing a new you. I want to congratulate you and take this time to introduce myself. My name is Matthew Dunn, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker based in Connecticut, with thirteen years of experience. I help children, adolescents and adults work towards addressing the negative internal dialogue and feelings that prevent them from doing and engaging in things they once found enjoyable in order to lead a positive and fulfilled life.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

You have already taken the hardest step. I want to let you know that our first session will focus on building comfort and security in getting to know one another. We will engage in simple introductions and work together to process your desired needs and concerns. You will leave the first and every session with steps and skills to use and grow and will always have time to follow up on needs and concerns at every session. This will help us to develop a mutual plan of care that has tailored goals for us to work on in follow up sessions.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

Having a compassionate and understanding approach, has allowed me to work with individuals of all ages. I see each person as an individual, with individualized needs that can only be address with skills and plans tailored towards them. This allows for the building of a strong therapeutic connection. I take my time to get to know you. This in turn builds trust and security within treatment and allows for effective communication and positive outcomes.

Describe the client(s) you are best positioned to serve.

I have a love for working with individuals of all ages. It is fulfilling to watch and support each person grow and develop towards their desired goals. My clients tend to feel weighed down and lost as well as anxious with their feelings and thoughts but remain hopeful that change can occur. Having that one spark can ignite the change you have always been looking for. Together, we will create a safe and inviting environment to help you realize this potential.

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) has been the fundamental backbone of my therapeutic approach with children, adolescents and adults for thirteen years. In treating numerous individuals with mental health conditions such as Depression and Anxiety, CBT has allowed them to foster an understanding between their thoughts and feelings and how they influence their behavior. We will work together to help you understand these connections, develop skills and tools to challenge, role play, and problem solve your thought patterns and learn healthy behaviors to have a balanced mental and emotional wellbeing.

Trauma-Focused CBT

In my practice, Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) has been a helpful and supportive approach for children, adolescents, and their families to process trauma-related experiences for over six years. We will work together to help you regain control of your life by safely processing painful memories and experiences and developing the tools and skills necessary to reduce the weight of these experiences in a gradual, structured way. We will work together to challenge irrational thought patterns, integrate tailored relaxation techniques, and support you in writing a trauma narrative to help you heal and retell your story from a place of strength.

Family Therapy

For thirteen years, I have been able to work with families to create open dialogues to develop better relationships with each other through a safe, calm and supportive way. By incorporating specific approaches, education in areas such as anger, grief, stress, communication and mental health conditions, we can support and guide you and your family to grow in connection with one another. I will guide you to communicate in a non-judgmental style, help you and your family work together toward common goals, and suggest ways to address problem behaviors.

Strength-Based

In my practice, I have used a strengths-based perspective in combination with other treatment approaches, which for thirteen years has supported and empowered individuals of all ages to recognize their own potential. I will help you discover and incorporate your natural strengths, qualities and talents in order to support you in developing reliance, emphasize and support you in recognizing your positive attributes and ability to grow. We will draw on your positive qualities to challenge and support you in developing positive mental health.
