Hi, my name is Jonathon Payne and I am a practicing Licensed Clinical Mental Health Clinician, LCMHC, with the State of North Carolina with over 18 years of experience. Most of my work experience has come from working with individuals in crisis settings and or situations. The work has always been challenging, humbling, and rewarding. It has taught me the value of true genuineness and the importance of being able to connect with people and build working relationships. I love therapy. I respect the therapeutic process and value the hard work and introspection it requires. Therapy is something that I am passionate about. Everyday it provides me an opportunity to help others and learn from others. I am proud of the things I have learned, but even more humbled and optimistic of things that I continue to learn. One thing I would tell you is that a have a real passion and commitment to counseling and the therapeutic process. It is and has been what I love to do. I put tremendous value on the importance communication, language, and building a good therapeutic relationship or rapport. Its important to me that you, the patient feel safe, heard, and valued. My counseling style is very laid back and supportive, with a very non-judgmental stance. However, I am not afraid to roll my sleeves up and work hard. I believe in being supportive, motivating, and challenging. Its important that you have the opportunity to work hard, learn, grow, while developing realistic attainable and measurable goals.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

Our first session together will be very laid back. It is important to me that you, the patient are comfortable. Together, through dialogue we will explore the reason or reasons you have chosen to participate in therapy. From there we would outline a plan of achievable measurable goals. Having said this I emphasize that I believe at working at your pace. Often times there are issues which are challenging to disclose and can be painful to talk about. It is paramount to me that you have the comfort and knowledge that I understand and respect the sensitivity and difficulty that this process entails.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

My experience working with people always brings me back to the importance of genuineness and caring. I am meticulous and thorough. I am somehow who will explore the smallest detail and am prone to endless analogies. I can go into extensive detail about various techniques and methodologies; but what matters to me is your trust and understanding that I care. That I listen. That you feel valued and know that I did my best to improve your quality of life.

I believe in the importance of meeting with you the client, where you are at in life. Sometimes this can involve a different approach. Often times different people respond better to different treatment modalities. To that end, I try to be flexible in my approach so that we can work together and find the best ways to improve your quality of life.

Strength-Based

I believe in the idea of feeding your strengths and starving your weaknesses. I think in identifying those things which you do well, we can outline a direction to approach the challenges your facing.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

I have found Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to be very useful in working with patients. I like that it takes a down to Earth direct approach to the dynamics and issues many of us struggle with. CBT helps to identify flaws in our thinking which create and or heighten anxieties other issues which can plague us. CBT allows me as the therapist to explore your issues and help you to see another way, often completely different way to approach and solve a problem.

Person-centered (Rogerian)

I love this kind of therapy. It allows the patient to steer the boat so to speak. Person-centered therapy can be empowering. It allows the patient the comfort is having a strong role in their treatment. Which, again is really vital. Unconditional positive regard. This is the idea that I hear you and I support you. This doesn't mean that we agree on everything, but provides a very collaborative environment for us to do the work that we need to do.
