Hello! My name is Dr. Steia Williams, and I am a licensed clinical social worker and licensed psychology associate in Maryland and Virginia. I have a Master's in social work and a Doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology. I have over 8 years of experience in providing individual and couples therapy. I help clients struggling with anxiety, depression, PTSD, and relationship difficulties.
In our first session, we will start with introductions and discuss your reason for therapy and your background information. I will then lead you through a series of open-ended questions about your family, social, medical, trauma, and mental health history. Please be advised that some of the questions can be personal but are necessary for me to assess where you are in your journey. We will also discuss how I can support you toward your goals and scheduling preferences.
I believe the actual process of change in therapy starts with the connection between the therapist and the client. Having worked with a wide range of clients, I developed a uniquely humanistic approach to treatment. I foster a safe, supportive environment for clients to feel comfortable bringing the most authentic version of themselves into therapy. It is through my connection with clients that I am able to identify key concerns and provide an individualized treatment plan that meets the specific needs of each client.
I love working with individuals who feel ready to take a deep dive into exploring more about themselves and would like to develop tools to work toward thier goals.
Other specialties
I identify as
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
One of my core approaches to anxiety and depression. The mind and the body are connected. CBT is designed to target negative thought patterns that contribute to anxiety and depression. CBT teaches the client how to become their therapist and develop positive self-talk. This method requires minor tasks to complete in between sessions to give clients tools to manage anxiety and depression.
Cognitive Processing (CPT)
Cognitive processing Therapy is a trauma-based form of CBT. CPT is a structured type of therapy that helps clients work through the impact of trauma by identifying "stuck points" and giving clients the tools to reduce the impact of traumatic experiences.
Dialectical Behavior (DBT)
This structured form of therapy focuses on building skills in interpersonal effectiveness, emotional regulation, mindfulness, and distress tolerance. This is a type of therapy that is used to help clients with mood disorders and suicidal ideation.
Interpersonal
This basic form of talk therapy utilizes the therapeutic relationship to foster change. In this type of approach, I help clients navigate issues by exploring their perspectives and providing alternative suggestions to reflect on as they move throughout treatment. This requires building a safe and trusting bond in therapy so that the therapist can be the sounding board for the client and provide constructive, tangible feedback.
