Hello! I've been a social worker in Indiana for over 15 years now. Before 'settling down' as a mental health therapist I worked directly in homes, schools, hospitals, and psychiatric units with children and families living in poverty, struggling with mental health and addiction issues, with both victims and perpetrators of abuse. While my direct experiences helped to deepen my understanding and empathy- sometimes just talking, validating, and educating alone is not enough to help clients in a significant and lasting way. Adding advanced therapy models of EMDR and IFS has helped accelerate the results my clients are seeing.

Get to know me

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

After the initial assessment and getting to know each other, getting a feel for your background, problem symptoms, and goals, we start by learning relaxation techniques to build your toolbox of coping skills, both for you to use in your daily life and for us to use during deeper work to calm the nervous system. We will work to find whatever techniques work best for your unique body and system, starting with EMDR relaxation methods including visualization and slow tapping.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

One strength is bringing more than talk therapy to the table. I often hear from patients after EMDR and IFS sessions that they are relieved to finally see significant and deep results after trying talk therapy off and on over the years. It can be disappointing when talking everything out logically and learning how we're 'supposed' to be thinking and feeling doesn't fix/heal alone. Hopefully this doesn't sound intimidating, it takes no special amount of intelligence, understanding, or insight for these models to help. Using evidence based practice models doesn't mean that our sessions will be cold or clinical. I also hear from patients they feel understood, heard, and enjoy my humor and warmth. The first step is scheduling an intro phone call to break the ice, get a feel for me and my style, the video technology I use, ask questions about how these therapy models work, make sure our schedules line up, and really just chat about anything else that would help you find the right fit. It's really okay to shop around before commiting! I see clients Monday - Thursday 9am - 4pm. Email me at jalbin @ therapyemail.com to set up a time for a free intro call.

The clients I'm best positioned to serve

I enjoy working with all kinds of people and problems. The majority of my experience and recent trainings have been with people reacting to traumatic experiences, with people experiencing depression, anxiety, grief, dissociation, childhood trauma. Some patients worry their problems are too small for therapy, that they shouldn’t be feeling this way when their life is okay or their childhood wasn’t that bad. There can be shame surrounding one’s own inability to just feel better already. We don't need to have experienced a big trauma to have difficulty with emotions, self-worth, or difficulty managing stress. We'll get curious about the symptoms bothering you and tune into the parts that are energizing the problem.

My treatment methods

EMDR

Some cuts are deeper than others, and need stitches before your body is able to step up and heal on its own. EMDR is like that first stitch needed for the nervous system to be able to heal. EMDR helps the brain refile where memories are stored, moving memories from the emotional part of the brain back into long term storage- so the past stays in the past.

Internal Family Systems (IFS)

Both EMDR and IFS therapy models enhance talk therapy by activating a deeper level of healing that is possible in the nervous system. With IFS, we will explore the different parts of you driving unwanted symptoms and behaviors and work to directly pull problems up at their roots.
