Luis Ruiz
I'm Luis, a psych NP in NJ. I do your therapy and your meds — one guy, one plan. No fluff. No judgment. No eggshells. Most men here swore therapy wasn't for them. I treat your life, not just a symptom, and use as few meds as I can. If you want real help and are ready to do the work, you're in.
First session
First session is a conversation, not an interrogation. No clipboard, no couch, no "and how does that make you feel." We're on video, you're in your own space, and we just talk — what's going on, what's not working, and what you actually want out of this. I'll ask real questions and give you real answers. If meds make sense, we'll talk about them honestly — I lean toward as few as possible, not as many as I can write. If they don't, we build a plan around your actual life: work, relationships, habits, the stuff underneath the stuff. You don't have to have it "figured out" or know the right words. Show up as you are. My only rule is respect — mine for you, yours for the work. By the end, you'll know exactly what we're doing and why. That's it. See you there.
Strengths
Most people get a therapist for talking and a separate prescriber who barely knows them. With me it's one person for the whole picture — the same guy who knows your story manages your treatment. Nothing gets lost between two offices. I don't do eggshells or fake-neutral. I'll sit with you when you need it and push back when you need that instead. You'll always know where I stand. And I treat your life, not just your symptoms — real, tangible support. Help with a résumé, prepping for a big day, studying alongside you, sorting out resources. Whatever actually moves your life forward. I built this for guys who figured therapy wasn't for them — but the approach (no fluff, no judgment, real talk) works for anyone willing to show up honestly. If that's you, we'll get along.
Ideal clients
My guy is a man who was told to "man up" and never had a spot to just be real. He's got anger, anxiety, ADHD, a breakup, or a rut, and he swore therapy wasn't for him. He's tired of faking fine. He wants no fluff, no judgment, just real talk — and he's ready to do the work, not only to vent.
Treatment methods
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
CBT comes down to this: how you think drives how you feel and what you do — and we can change it. When you're stuck in anger, anxiety, or a spiral, there's usually a story your brain is running on autopilot. We catch that story, check whether it's actually true, and swap the move for one that works better. It's practical, not fluffy. You'll leave with real tools and something to practice, and we adjust it around what's actually happening in your week — not a worksheet for the sake of a worksheet.
Motivational Interviewing
Change sticks when it's your idea, not mine. Instead of lecturing you, I help you get clear on what you actually want and why — then we build from there. It's a big reason I lean toward as few meds as possible: real motivation beats a prescription.
Solution-Focused Brief Treatment
We spend less time excavating everything that's wrong and more time on what's already working and what "better" looks like for you. Concrete, forward-moving, and built to get you results you can feel — then out the door running your own life.
Acceptance and commitment (ACT)
Some things you can't just think your way out of. ACT is about making room for the hard stuff without letting it run the show, and taking action toward what actually matters to you — even when it's uncomfortable.
