Courtney Matthews, MS, LCPC, NCC Do you find difficulty identifying and communicating your needs to those around you? I've spent my career curating a person-centered approach that allows for the consistent building of strong therapeutic relationships encouraging the development of meaningful insight and change within the lives of my clients. Specializing in treatment concerning anxiety, depression, mood disorders, trauma-informed care, as well as executive functioning, my person-centered approach supports the integration of personal agency and self-worth into the management of your daily life. While earning my MS in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Johns Hopkins University, I completed my internship at Friendship Public Charter Schools Collegiate Academy, Washington, DC. In doing this I was allowed to work with adolescents from diverse economic backgrounds which expanded my views regarding the definitions of meaningful work within the counseling setting. After receiving my Master of Science, I worked at Turning Point Clinic in Baltimore, MD. Utilizing my experience, I helped individuals suffering from substance use disorders realize the effect internal as well as external factors have on their use. Most recently I am working with clients in a community-based holistic mental health and wellness center (Balance Point Wellness) to process their thoughts and emotions as well as find coping strategies that may work as scaffolding to manage short-term as well as long-term functional difficulties related to their mental health.

Get to know me

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

In our first session together, we'll start with a brief introduction as well as the gathering as well as clarification of background information with the goal of collecting enough information to provide a supportive environment for your needs. This will help me create a tailored plan for us to follow-up on in future sessions.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

While I specialize in treatment concerns including anxiety, depression, mood disorders, trauma-informed care, as well as executive dysfunction I've found that these areas of concentration are rooted in an overall need for support and understanding which then influences our engagement in daily life. By providing an unbiased space for you to explore your structural needs, I've found that some of the underlying causes of faced difficulties begin to allow for support in a way that maybe has not previously been experienced.

The clients I'm best positioned to serve

My practice is geared toward individuals open to exploration of insights with the goals of radical self-acceptance as a means of identifying and processing overall needs in the client's environment.

My treatment methods

Person-centered (Rogerian)

I've identified a great amount of success with person-centered therapy in the identification of the clients needs. Utilizing this approach allows to engage with additional methods through the lense of the client's needs. This approach believes that the client is most familiar with their lives experiences and thus should be listened to.

Mindfulness-Based Therapy

Mindfulness allows the approach of encountered difficulties through the lense of active awareness which can aid in our ability to identify supportive behaviors as opposed to behaviors which limit our identification of our needs.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

CBT is a research supported methods to apply neurocognitive techniques to our needs. The goal is not to dismiss our reactions it's to identify processes that might meet our overall needs.

Trauma Informed Care

It is important to look at interactions and behaviors through a trauma-focused lense with the goal of limiting retraumatization while we slowly broach the subject in a safe and supportive way.

If I could select every option to describe Courtney, I would — that's how remarkable she is. Each session leaves me feeling empowered, uplifted, and more confident in myself. Courtney listens with intent and compassion, and she gently challenges me to grow, reflect, and embrace my surroundings with new perspective. I'm deeply grateful for the support she's offered and excited for the continued journey ahead with her.

She is everything I want in a therapist. She listens and provides meaningful feedback. Her ability to cut through the nonsense while allowing me time to process works really well. I'm glad our paths crossed.
