Judy Messenger
Hello. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with more than twenty years of experience. I obtained my Masters degree in Social Work from West Virginia University, and I also have a Masters degree in School Counseling from Wilmington University. I have worked with middle and high school students for over a decade, and I also have several years of experience with older adults. Whether you are struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, or grief, I believe in a strengths based approach to counseling. My clients typically describe me as warm, kind, and genuine. I have training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Solution Focused Therapy. My goal is to help you identify strengths and build coping skills. I can’t wait to meet you and begin our work together!
First session
During our first session, I will be spending a lot of time getting to know you. We will talk about your concerns and goals, and identify your strengths. I will also take a detailed personal history that will enable me to best serve you. I’m also happy to take a few minutes to answer any questions about my experience and background. At the end of our session, we can discuss the frequency of sessions and plans to move forward.
Strengths
My biggest strengths are that I am pleasant, kind, and easy to talk to. I consider myself to be a flexible and open minded individual. The variety of settings that I have worked in has given me the ability to connect with people of all ages. I’m also a huge animal lover, and I had a certified therapy dog for many years.
Ideal clients
The clients I am best able to serve are those who are struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, and grief. I also really love to work with teens, and I have a lot of experience helping them to work through the unique issues they face. My experience in long-term care settings also has taught me a great deal about our older adult population and the people who care for them. Because I have worked in a variety of settings, I have the ability to connect with people of all ages. I have worked in school based settings, psychiatric hospitals, and assisted living facilities.
Treatment methods
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
CBT focuses on the thoughts and feelings that lead to certain behaviors. By examining our thoughts and feelings, we can often gain a different perspective. Setting specific goals and examining belief systems are an important part of the process. Exposure therapy and relaxation techniques are often very helpful for people suffering from anxiety, depression, trauma, and OCD.
