My name is Ian Struthers. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over ten years expierence providing clinical mental health services and psychotherapy to adults using a client centered, humanistic, goal-oriented, solution-focused approach to better cope with stressors and life transitions impacting their mental health and well-being. Throughout my years in practice, one thing has remained constant: my passion for supporting individuals build resiliency, empower themselves and overcome whatever challenges they are facing.
During our first session we will focus on your needs for therapy and goals for treatment. We will work in collaboration on a treatment plan centered around you with your needs and goals. Together, we will establish a therapeutic alliance and create a safe space where you will be heard without judgment.
During my over 10 years in practice, I have prided myself on meeting my client's where they are at in addressing stressors, life transitions and challenges impacting their daily lives. I encourage my patients to view therapy as a gift we give ourselves to explore, grow and improve your well-being and quality of life during difficult times. I use a client-centered approach to support you in addressing current challenges, stressors, and behaviors.
Do you ever believe the messages you tell yourself can be distorted, and because of that, you experience unnecessary emotional distress and self-criticism? As a Cognitive Behavioral Therapist, I am interested in exploring your mistaken beliefs, unhelpful schemas (rules we live by), and faulty thinking that can be detrimental to your mood, self-esteem and emotional well-being; causing daily interference your daily life. With curiosity and without judgment, we will use a collaborative approach in our sessions to investigate the evidence and efficacy of your unhelpful thought patterns, to reconstruct a “new narrative” of self-talk to build resilience, improve self-esteem and empower yourself to make meaningful changes in your life. CBT places an emphasis on helping you learn effective, evidenced based coping skills to reduce distress and better cope with situations impacting your mood, self-esteem and well-being. CBT is a beneficial tool; either alone or in combination with other therapeutic interventions to address your mental health challenges such as depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, grief and loss.
DBT is an effective, skills based therapy that helps people learn to accept their emotions, tolerate distress, and change harmful behaviors. It's based on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), but it's adapted for people who experience emotions intensely. DBT focuses on implementation and practice of core coping skills to regulate distress, improve interpersonal effectiveness and accept their emotions.
Humanistic therapy is a type of talk therapy that focuses on the individual, their potential, and their ability to make choices. It's based on the idea that people are inherently good and have the ability to find their own solutions to problems.
Psychodynamic therapy is a form of talk therapy that helps people understand how their past experiences and unconscious mind shape their current behavior and feelings. It's based on the theories of Sigmund Freud and psychoanalysis, but differs from traditional psychoanalysis in that psychodynamic therapists act more as guides than experts.
