Hello! I’m Lori McClain. I’ve been working in mental health care since the late 1990s, and it has truly been an honor to support individuals who may not always feel they have a voice. Throughout my career, I’ve worked in a variety of settings, including emergency services, inpatient and outpatient care, and residential programs. I approach my work from a nonjudgmental, harm‑reduction perspective. I enjoy bringing humor into my interactions, and I’m also direct and honest about expectations and the realities of different mental health conditions — while always recognizing that each person is unique and nothing is ever absolute. A couple of fun facts about me: I have an adorable French Bulldog named Malkie, and before entering mental health care, I spent about eight years as an international flight attendant. I still love to travel!

Get to know me

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

In your initial 55-minute session, you can expect a thorough, collaborative conversation where your voice and priorities come first. As your Psychiatric–Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP), my goal is to create a supportive, safe space grounded in honesty, a touch of humor, evidence-based care, and clear, straightforward communication—while making sure you have plenty of time to ask questions and feel fully heard. Together, we’ll review your mental health journey, medical history, and any past treatments, then explore what you’re experiencing now, identify current stressors, and clarify your goals moving forward.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

Think of me as a therapeutic DJ—I’ve got a massive playlist and I’m not afraid to mix the tracks. I blend a little CBT, a dash of DBT, and some motivational hype-talk to find the right vibe for you. I’ve genuinely never met a person I couldn't find something to like about, and I celebrate all the unique cultural 'flavor' you bring to the table. Also, if you hate one of my ideas? Tell me! My ego isn't invited to our sessions, so let's chat about what actually works for you.

The clients I'm best positioned to serve

I don’t really believe in an 'ideal client' because humans are beautifully complex and constantly evolving. Instead of a straight line to the finish line, think of progress as a series of peaks and valleys. Just like managing a physical condition like diabetes requires consistent care—like taking insulin—mental health thrives on a steady routine. Whether it’s staying consistent with medication or showing up for therapy, those 'maintenance' steps are what help you navigate the tougher days and keep your momentum going.

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

Sometimes the way one views a situation or condition may be negativistic or flawed. Circumstances can often be improved once thoughts have been replaced. Thoughts lead to your feelings which lead to your behaviors. For example: a work aquaintance doesn't say good morning as she usually does. You think "oh she must be mad at me" so you don't pick up her mail from her mailbox as you usually do at lunch. You are anxious about what you couls have done all day. Turns out she was preoccupied by news that her rent was going up and didn't see you. You've worried about something you made an assumption about all day which led to an action that didn't have to be.
