Hello! My name is Shea (Devann “Shea” Brown) and I’m a Licensed Professional Counselor with 10 years of experience providing therapy. I am licensed by the Board of Counseling in Virginia. I am passionate about fostering a safe and inclusive environment, deeply rooted in empathy and respect and aimed at creating a supportive space where clients can explore their authentic selves.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

In our first session together, we'll start with brief introductions before we go over informed consent. As soon as that is done, we dive into the specific challenges you're facing and feelings you are experiencing. This will help me create a tailored plan for us to work through in follow-up sessions. At the end of each session, we confirm our next appointment.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

I believe one of my most significant strengths is my ability to empower clients. I am passionate about helping individuals recognize their own strengths and abilities, guiding them to build resilience and self-efficacy. I support clients in taking control of their healing process, which often leads to transformative changes in how they approach their challenges, relationships, and themselves. I also bring a strong sense of emotional intelligence into my work. I am able to recognize and reflect my own emotional responses in a way that is helpful for the therapeutic process. This awareness helps me stay grounded in the moment and responsive to the needs of the client, which I believe is crucial in fostering a positive therapeutic alliance.

Describe the client(s) you are best positioned to serve.

As a therapist, I am drawn to working with individuals who are committed to self-exploration and growth, regardless of where they are on their journey. I enjoy collaborating with clients who are open to deepening their understanding of themselves, addressing past wounds, and learning how to navigate the complexities of their emotions, relationships, and life transitions. I enjoy working with clients who face challenges around self-esteem, identity, and emotional regulation, particularly those who feel stuck in negative patterns of thinking or behavior. I find it incredibly rewarding to help individuals identify and challenge limiting beliefs, helping them develop healthier, more compassionate relationships with themselves and others.

My treatment methods

Attachment-based

In my clinical work, I incorporate attachment-based treatment methods as a foundational approach to understanding and addressing clients’ relational patterns, emotional regulation difficulties, and early developmental wounds. My experience with this modality has deepened my capacity to view presenting symptoms not only through a diagnostic lens but within the context of disrupted or insecure attachment histories. I draw heavily from attachment theory to inform how I build the therapeutic relationship—prioritizing safety, consistency, and emotional congruence. I recognize that for many clients, especially those with complex trauma or early neglect, the therapeutic relationship itself can become a reparative experience. I am mindful of how transference and countertransference often reflect early attachment dynamics, and I use these moments to gently explore unconscious patterns and build awareness.

Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy

I use REBT techniques to help clients identify rigid or absolute thinking patterns—such as catastrophizing, “should” statements, or low frustration tolerance—and guide them toward more adaptive, rational beliefs. This often includes the use of the ABCDE model (Activating event, Beliefs, Consequences, Disputation, and new Effect), which I apply with clients to break down problematic thought processes and reconstruct healthier cognitive and emotional patterns. REBT is particularly effective for clients dealing with anxiety, depression, anger, and self-esteem issues. I often combine REBT with mindfulness or behavioral activation strategies to reinforce insight with action. I also emphasize the development of unconditional self-acceptance, a core REBT principle, which helps clients reduce self-criticism and approach challenges with greater compassion and personal responsibility.

Person-centered (Rogerian)

In practice, I prioritize creating a warm, empathic, and nonjudgmental environment where clients feel genuinely heard and accepted. I draw upon the core conditions of person-centered therapy—empathy, unconditional positive regard, and congruence—to foster a safe space where clients can explore their inner world without fear of criticism or influence. I believe this kind of authentic presence is often what facilitates the most meaningful and lasting change for individuals I work with. Rather than imposing direction or interpretation, I listen actively and reflectively, allowing the client's process to unfold naturally.
