I graduated from Alabama State University in 2011 with my MS in Clinical Mental health counseling. I have done a vast amount of work in all treatment modalities as well as various populations. Primarily I have worked with families, in the community, crisis and trauma-centered work, as well as substance use and severe mental health illness. My drive in this field is to help individuals who are struggling to mentally get to a place of peace and be that ear that can help one's process and sort out whatever struggles they may be facing where accessing family and friends is not an option. I'm so happy that you are reaching out for help. I am Johne Mitchell, a licensed therapist. You can read more about my background, education, experience, and counseling approach by clicking on my name on this page. I look forward to working with you to resolve the issues you are experiencing and hope that in this process you will be able to find balance.

Get to know me

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

Clients can expect to intorduce themselves, likes, dislikes, life journey and what brought them to seeking care. I have a very conversational style of therapy, laid back and the only expectations are those that are set by the client themsleves.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

My biggest strength as a clinician is the vast experience I have with multiple populations, in adverse conditions in the community, managing to connect with individuals that are experiencing a range of emotional distress to psychosis. The experience I have avails me to have many tools in my purview to use with Clients as well as being able to connect with Clients from all walks of life and the vast situations that life brings. I like to pride myself on being able to bring humor to session, connect with clients in a way that for them its like talking to a friend that can guide you where you want to be without judgement and opinions that personal relationships often bring to a dynamic.

The clients I'm best positioned to serve

I specialize in supporting individuals and families navigating a wide range of emotional and behavioral challenges. I am best positioned to serve clients who are experiencing concerns related to mood disorders, such as depression or bipolar disorder, as well as those dealing with anxiety, stress, or emotional dysregulation. Many of my clients are seeking tools to manage anger, self-harming behaviors, or suicidal ideation, and are working to improve their coping skills and emotional resilience. I also work extensively with individuals struggling with substance use, addiction, or chronic relapse, including those in early recovery or ambivalent about change. I support clients who are exploring the underlying emotional or relational patterns connected to their use, often incorporating relapse prevention strategies, motivational enhancement, and trauma-informed care. My approach is particularly helpful for clients facing life transitions, relationship issues, family conflict, or challenges related to school, identity, or spirituality. I also support children and adolescents, particularly those experiencing behavioral concerns, thinking disorders, or difficulties with emotional regulation in academic or home settings. Whether clients are seeking insight, symptom relief, or long-term healing, I aim to foster a therapeutic space that is supportive, goal-oriented, and responsive to their unique values and needs. My ideal clients are those who are open to engaging in a collaborative process—whether they are just beginning their mental health journey or have been working toward wellness for some time.

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

I have extensive experience utilizing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) as a foundational treatment modality in my clinical practice. My training and application of CBT have been grounded in evidence-based approaches aimed at helping clients identify and modify maladaptive thought patterns and behaviors that contribute to emotional distress and functional impairments. In practice, I use CBT with a range of clients presenting with conditions such as anxiety disorders, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and substance use. I begin by collaboratively identifying the client's core beliefs, automatic thoughts, and cognitive distortions. Through structured sessions, I guide clients in recognizing the connection between their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, and in developing more adaptive ways of thinking.

Eclectic

In my clinical work, I utilize an eclectic approach, which allows me to draw from a range of evidence-based modalities to meet the unique needs of each client. Rather than relying on a single theoretical orientation, I integrate interventions from various therapeutic frameworks—including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), and person-centered therapy—based on the client’s presentation, preferences, and goals. This approach is especially useful in working with diverse populations and complex cases where multiple factors—such as trauma history, co-occurring disorders, cultural identity, and social determinants of health—must be addressed in a flexible and responsive manner. I assess which techniques or strategies are most effective in the moment and adapt accordingly, ensuring that treatment remains client-centered and collaborative.
