My name is Dr. Kelsie Maguire. I recently received my PhD in Counseling and Psychological Studies with a concentration in Trauma and Crisis Counseling. I also have a background as a social worker. I am a military spouse of 9 years, having lived in various places, encountering various populations and cultures. I have two children and two dogs! I enjoy reading and spending quality time with my family.
In the first session I aim to get to know the client. I inquire on various aspects of their lives and what led them to session. I discuss goals with the client and expectations of therapy sessions.
I believe I have a plethera of experience in various settings that has allowed me to learn different ways to approach people. I find that the client knows themselves the best and I am a supporting role in that client's life. I believe some of my greatest strengths are being creative and using a clients interest to ensure they are getting what they expect, need and want out of sessions.
I hope to help individuals feel supported and confident in who they are. That ranges from someone who is struggling with trauma all the way to acceptance of self, and relational problems. Every person is unique and deserves a chance to be heard and given tools to become the best version of themselves!
Kelsie Maguire offers therapy covered by Kaiser Permanente - Medicaid and UnitedHealthcare/Optum - Medicaid in Virginia.
Understanding how our thoughts, feelings and behaviors are connected is great way to begin shifting how we think and our reactions. I utilized CBT to help clients identify the interconnectedness, to then begin identifying new ways to think, or change the behavior attached to the thoughts and feelings.
Understanding trauma and the various experiences a person may have regarding their trauma is important. Trauma can make people feel out of place, or as if they are different. However, understanding the normal symptoms of a trauma experience can help normalize what the person is going through. I use trauma informed care with all clients.
Therapy doesn't need to be forever! Sometimes, we have challenges that arise where we only need a space to brief time to help overcome and persevere. I use Solution Focused Treatments to help set realistic and attainable goals, helping the client to overcome their challenges.
Play therapy is a great way to have children and adolescents open up with a therapist. I use play therapy games focused on certain challenges the person may be experiencing, as well as a medium to allow for easier communication.
