(she/her)
Hello! My name is Joy, and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) located in Central Virginia. With 9 years of experience in both inpatient and outpatient settings, I strive to meet every client where they are at without judgment, regardless of what they are struggling with. I believe everyone has capacity to heal, grow, and be kinder to themselves if they're provided compassion, understanding, safety, empathy, and validation. Whether you're processing past wounds, facing current challenges, or seeking deeper self-understanding, I’m here to come alongside you to collaborate with you and give you the time and space you need. I specifically utilize cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and person-centered therapy to bring out lasting healing and growth, as well as integrate tenets of narrative therapy and solution-focused therapy (SFT).
Our first session will be all about getting to know each other. While we'll review biopsychosocial information (AKA the various facets of who you are), you will also have the opportunity to ask me any questions and/or address any anxiety or concerns you may have about therapy.
Due to having the privilege of walking alongside a diverse range of clients over the past 9 years, I take great pride in being able to provide a safe and nonjudgmental environment. I have loved listening to and learning about my clients' interests, cultures, and other experiences that differ from my own. My strengths include having a trauma-informed lens, collaborating with clients to tailor treatment to fit their unique needs, empowerment and advocacy, and being able to be compassionate while direct when needed.
While my goal is to provide a safe and nonjudgmental space for everyone, I am passionate about working with LGBTQIA+ individuals, people of color, and others navigating the complexities of marginalization, identity, and resilience. I specialize in working with individuals struggling with depression, anxiety, trauma, suicidality, and addiction, as well as people on the Autism spectrum. Your life is your story, so my role in our sessions is to listen and provide reflection, support, validation, and empowerment to help you reach your goals.

Sometimes our brains play tricks on us and lead us to believe negative thoughts about ourselves and the world around us. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based treatment modality that empowers clients to take control of these negative thoughts, which in turn positively effect emotions and behaviors. I have used CBT for the past nine years with a wide variety of clients struggling with various stressors and traumas who have reported improvements to their thoughts, mood, and relationships with themselves and others.
Trauma has a way of effecting every facet of life, and it is not easy to heal from. However, I trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) because I am personally aware of how life-changing this evidence-based treatment modality can be. EMDR rewires the neural connections in your brain to help you process your deepest hurts and negative beliefs about yourself, as well as reinforce positive beliefs about yourself to improve emotion regulation and heal from whatever trauma you have experienced.
Oftentimes people seek therapy to find answers to their problems in life, viewing the therapist as an authority figure or advice giver, but most people already have the answers they are looking for within themselves. My belief is that every person has the capacity to heal and grow if they're provided compassion, understanding, safety, empathy, and validation. Clients are able to process, explore, feel, and gain new awareness and perspective into their lives when these basic emotional needs are met.
Therapy is not a "one size fits all" scenario where one treatment modality will work for everyone. My goal is to collaborate with clients to find the best means to meet their needs within my expertise. Along with CBT, EMDR, and person-centered therapy, I have also integrated tenets of narrative therapy and solution-focused therapy (SFT) into my practice. Narrative therapy is an evidence-based treatment modality that empowers clients by helping them see their life as their story they have the opportunity to rewrite. While we can't change the past, narrative therapy helps us change the negative stories we tell about ourselves by separating ourselves from the problems we've faced, identifying exceptions and times we've been resilient when faced with said problems, and reclaiming autonomy and power as we are the authors of our stories. Solution-focused therapy is another evidence-based treatment modality that is aptly named. Clients focus on the future and potential solutions instead of the past and the problems themselves, identify their strengths and past successes in problem-solving, and collaborate with me to set practical goals. While SFT is more straightforward, clients still walk away feeling empowered, confident, and hopeful.
