Emily Bonar

LPC3 years of experience

I believe that therapy is most effective when it is grounded in real human connection. I am a wife, mother, and therapist. While my professional training guides my clinical work, my life experiences have reinforced the importance of authenticity, empathy, and human connection in the therapeutic relationship. I believe meaningful healing occurs when clients feel genuinely seen and understood. My goal is to create a space where clients feel safe enough to be honest about their experiences without fear of judgment. I approach therapy with warmth and compassion, recognizing that every person’s story is unique.

First session

We will get to know each other and what is going on that is bringing you to therapy. Our first session will also require us to go over what therapy will look like. What you can expect from me, and also exploring your expectations.

Strengths

I believe therapy should feel both supportive and growth-oriented. Clients can expect a nonjudgmental space where they feel accepted as they are, while also being encouraged to look at difficult patterns, challenge unhelpful beliefs, and consider new perspectives.

Ideal clients

My ideal client is an adult who is struggling with anxiety, relationship concerns, or feeling stuck in patterns that no longer serve them. They may be navigating challenges in romantic relationships, family dynamics, or their relationship with themselves. They are open to exploring the connections between their past experiences and current struggles while building practical skills to manage emotions and create healthier relationships.

Treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

After helping clients understand how early experiences shaped their core beliefs, I use CBT techniques to identify thoughts and assumptions that are no longer serving them. We examine the evidence for those beliefs, explore alternative perspectives, and develop more balanced, accurate ways of thinking. As those beliefs shift, clients often experience changes in their emotions, behaviors, relationships, and self-esteem.

Psychodynamic

In our work together, we’ll explore how past experiences and important relationships may be influencing your thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and relationships today. By identifying patterns, understanding where they came from, and increasing self-awareness, we can gain insight into challenges that may feel stuck or repetitive. This deeper understanding creates opportunities for healing, healthier relationships, and lasting change.

Trauma-Informed Care

Rather than asking “What’s wrong with you?” I seek to understand “What happened to you?” Together, we work to understand how past experiences may be affecting your life today, process those experiences at a pace that feels safe, and develop healthier ways of coping, healing, and moving forward. Throughout the process, I prioritize safety, collaboration, empowerment, and respect for your unique experiences.

Integrative

I believe that therapy is not one-size-fits-all. Every person brings a unique history, set of experiences, strengths, and challenges into the therapy room. Rather than relying on a single therapeutic approach, I integrate techniques from several evidence-based modalities, including psychodynamic therapy, attachment-based therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and trauma-informed care. Together, we create a treatment approach that is tailored to your specific needs, goals, and stage of healing.
