Hello! My name is Hunter. I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT)! Life is hard. It can be filled with transitions, challenges, anxieties, grief, depression, a past that just doesn't seem to leave you alone - just to name a few. These things can cause us to live a life that is inauthentic, and make decisions that aren't in alignment with the values and hopes that we have. As a therapist, I see it as my role to come alongside you and be with you as you navigate life's challenges, with the goal of living an authentic, fulfilling life of joy. I see clients all over Ohio and California!
In our first session we will start with brief introductions, go over important information about what you can expect in therapy, and then we will dive into the specific challenges you're experiencing and what you're wanting out of the therapy experience. This will give us a path forward as we walk together through the challenges you're facing.
One of the best compliments I've ever received was from a young man who told me that "I feel like I can just leave my baggage here with you and I don't need to carry it with me anymore. You don't judge me for what I've done." My clients have told me that I am open, a great listener, treat them like the humans they are rather than the diagnoses that they've been labeled with, and that they don't feel judged by me even if everyone around them is. I recognize that this world is a complicated place and I firmly believe that we genuinely try to do the best we can with what we have. That philosophy guides me as a therapist because I am always open to you and your experience, without judgment.
I work with a wide range of people from all different backgrounds and all different ages who are experiencing challenges. I help people experiencing posttraumatic stress, depression, anxiety, life transitions, professional challenges, and emotional and relational difficulties, as well as men's issues. I use EMDR therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, Acceptance Commitment Therapy, and Narrative Therapy to help you as you are working towards your goals.
Hunter Tomlinson offers therapy covered by Buckeye Health Plan, Buckeye Health Plan (Managed Medicaid), Medicaid - Buckeye Health Plan and UnitedHealthcare/Optum - Medicaid in Ohio.
Everything good in therapy comes out of the relationship between you and the therapist. I believe that holding space for you to share about the things that are bothering you, having someone who believes your best intentions even when you don't, and having someone who can meaningfully reflect back the things you're saying is transformative.
I incorporate ACT into my practice as a way of encouraging clients towards mental flexibility and resiliency. The unstructured nature of ACT combined with the in-depth core processes allows for it to be applied to nearly any individual and their situation.
Narrative therapy is one of the first treatments I began using to help people experiencing challenges in their lives. I am a big believer that people aren't the problem, but the problem is the problem. Gaining some distance between you and the problem is a good first step in getting the perspective needed to make changes in life.
Solution Focused therapy is one of the first treatments I began using to help people experiencing challenges in their lives. I am a believer that people are able to come up with the solutions for the problems that they are experiencing, and have helped people recognize when they've been successful in the past overcoming problems similar to the ones they're experiencing now. I have used this tool in therapy and coaching situations.
I incorporate EMDR into treatment for individuals who have experienced trauma, anxiety, depression, or are just feeling stuck in life. EMDR is an effect way of helping people process through the experiences and memories that are holding them back!
