All behavior is purposeful. This means that we never do anything for no reason. Even when our behavior appears confusing or counterproductive to our values, our behavior has meaning and purpose. Therapy is a setting where we can gain insight about the origins of our perceptions, thinking and behavior. With clearer understanding, we are better equipped to identify factors within our control and consider alternative responses to our conditions. We gain awareness of the needs that are being met by potentially self-defeating thinking or behaviors and have a special opportunity to practice new thinking in the safety of therapy.
During our initial session we'll work towards clarifying values (what makes you happiest) and create a plan to maintain internal motivation towards durable change. Many of my clients report gaining clearer insight into the motivations behind their behavior and an ability to practice more sufficient ways of meeting their needs.
I have 17 years of experience helping adult, teens, couples and families. I mainly provide therapy for one simply reason: It works! I fully believe in the healing power of the therapeutic relationship and process. While each client and situation is unique, there are also "ultimate concerns" that are simply part of the human experience. I love being helpful to my clients and helping them discover patterns of thinking, emotions and behavior that have interfered with them creating the most meaningful and fulfilling life possible.
I love working with couples and individuals who are motivated towards change and improving their lives. I've work with various populations with a variety of concerns. Many of the couples that I have worked with report improved communication and connection in their relationships. I love helping couples clarify their values and goals for their relationship and working together with my clients to find ways to effectively communicate in their relationships. I especially enjoy working with clients working through addictions and substance use disorders. I love working together with my clients to explore their relationship ship substances or other addictive behaviors. Many of my clients report a new perspective on these patterns and a clearer understanding of the needs that are met by their relationship with their addictive behaviors. This often empowers them to find new value congruent and durable solutions to maintain a more self directed recovery.
Therapy is about congruence. Is the way we are living aligning with our values and what allows us to create our most meaningful and fulfilling life. ACT helps us to clarify these values and gives us an opportunity to evaluate if our thinking, emotions and behavior support our what is most important in our lives. It provides an opportunity to differentiate conditions in our life that are within our control and outside of our control. It then empowers us to make changes to better align with our values while also accepting these conditions without creating disability.
Existential therapy focuses on exploring the fundamental questions of human existence, such as the meaning of life, freedom, responsibility, and death. It aims to help individuals find purpose and authenticity in their lives by confronting these existential themes. The goal is to help individuals live in alignment with their values and beliefs, fostering a sense of authenticity.
Choosing the best type of therapy is like saying there is a best move in chess. The move is largely dependent on the position of the other pieces on the board. What might be the perfect move in one circumstance could be detrimental in a slightly different circumstance. I pull from several different modalities and orientations to meet the unique needs of the people I work with.
