(she/her)
Hello, and welcome to my side and style of the therapeutic process. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Psychotherapist. I am licensed to independently practice in Virginia and Maryland. I am a proud born and raised New Yorker (Queens) who is based in Virginia. I earned my master's in clinical social work from VCU in 2009 and since, I have worked with my boots on the ground in the community, within schools, and with a focus on social work and healthcare since 2017 in both the inpatient and outpatient hospital setting with client/patient populations from many different backgrounds and clinical needs.
In our first session together, we'll start with simple, informal introductions. Let's break the ice! What are your likes and dislikes? Let's talk about our tattoos. What's your pet's name? Who is your favorite music artist and why? What do you want/need me to know about you to ensure you feel comfortable and respected always when in session? Need a minute to cry, vent, or just take a deep breath and sit in silence - that's cool too! We will get to know a little about each other at a pace that is most comfortable for you. I will ask what brought you to therapy and what will make you feel like it is worth it to keep coming back. This will help me create a tailored plan for us to work through in follow-up sessions and make sure that therapy continues to be informative and worth your while in achieving any mental health and other wellness goals you may have. Come as you are and hopefully whenever you choose to end our therapeutic relationship, you'll have a clearer understanding of who YOU are, and your worth/value in this thing called life.
Throughout my academic, personal, and professional journey, I have been deeply committed to fostering inclusive environments where all individuals feel seen, heard, and valued for their lived experience. I am passionate about trauma-informed care and combating social injustices, destigmatizing mental health, and advocating for proper care and treatment of those challenged by comorbid disorders, anxiety, depression, chronic/progressive/terminal illnesses, end-of-life/legacy building, compassion fatigue/caregiver burnout, life changes and adjustment challenges, addiction/substance misuse, and people in prison or with a history of involvement with the legal system. I am an experienced clinician who has worked in various clinical and non-clinical/mental health settings...but...I am a human first. I am a woman of color/mixed heritage. I am a mother. I meet clients where they are at and will never take ownership of your growth because I am just a vessel holding space and guiding - YOU are doing the work. We will work collaboratively. While I earned my degrees and credentials, I lead with my humanity! "Real life stuff" is always applicable in our sessions. I have my own history of challenges, and I have done the work on both "sides of the couch," so to speak. I'll never equate my life to yours because we all have unique lived experiences, but I promise to come with a non-judgmental open mind, be ready to create a safe space for all and be a "real" person. If this sounds like a good fit for you let me help you work through some things, gain insight, heal and GROW (see what I did there?).
Have you been hesitant to get into therapy because you have a cliche idea of what it will be like from TV shows, the movies, or your friends' experiences? Or, have you tried therapy and felt like all your therapist did was listen but did not provide you with any feedback, guidance or thought-provoking questions, or only asked you "how does that make you feel?" or "where do you feel that in your body?" Have you been told to "breathe deeply, stay hydrated, practice mindfulness and get rest" and they will see you next session? So, none of this is wrong per se, however, the therapeutic process can be SO much more when a provider listens to understand each client as an individual and for their specific clinical needs and tailors their human and clinical approach, care and treatment.

I truly believe we can either speak life into ourselves, or we can unintentionally speak demise/detriment. I use CBT to assist clients with increasing self-awareness, particularly of their internal dialogue/thought patterns that result in certain behaviors which often perpetuate mental health challenges and emotional distress. I assist clients in understanding how their behaviors/thought patterns are aligned with their desired outcomes - or not, and how it can properly be addressed and worked through . This is typically achieved through a combination of talk therapy, psychoeducation, and identifying/working on measurable goals and changes through the use of worksheets/assignments.
I enjoy practicing from a client-centered approach. I don't fix people, but I can certainly guide and empower my clients in understanding and identifying their "why," i.e. their own reasons for wanting change. I think it is very impactful to create a space for people to feel in control of their own growth. I like to respectfully challenge clients - with their permission and when they are ready - to confront their resistance, ambivalence, and insecurities as it relates to change, to commit to said change, and have accountability.
I have always believed that you can't know what you don't know. You can't begin to try and seek answers when you don't even know the questions to begin asking. They say knowledge is power in academia, I believe this to be true for mental and physical health as well. That's why I believe psychoeducation is a powerful tool in the therapeutic process. It assists people with understanding a diagnosis, knowing what interventions/resources are available to them, learning how to cope with said diagnosis in a healthy manner, and/or managing themselvs or people in their life that may have challenges which altogether significantly decreases stigma. This can be achieved on the individual level with a therapist and/or involving family, friends and loved ones to contribute to overall improved well-being and quality of life.
When you think of the relational treatment method, think of relationships. This treatment method often pulls insights from attachment theory as a means of learning and comprehending the importance of how early relationship dynamics with oneself and others can influence one's ability to form healthy connections throughout life. The bottom line is relationships impact our well-being and mental health, so let's process this together to improve communication skills, set healthy boundaries, effectively express needs, and manage expectations within relationships.
Have you ever desired to have therapy with a real person? Do you long to just feel seen, heard, understood and validated. Have you ever felt "broken?" Well I'm hear to tell you, you're not broken and I can't fix you ...but I can help you explore hard feelings and events. I can help you learn to unlearn. How to break out of survival mode because you have already learned how to survive hard things in life, let me help you to learn how to allow peace and joy into your life as a new normal. This treatment method is one I feel particularly passionate about. It recognizes and responds to the effects trauma has on people. As a provider, I focus on creating a safe and supportive environment for healing. Have you ever asked yourself, "what's wrong with you?" If your answer is yes, I would assist you in exploring ACEs and asking, identifying, and processing "what has happened to you?" instead. People deserve to understand the impact of past experiences on current behavior and well-being. This is a judgment free zone. You may think you have dealt with all the "files" in your brain, but you may have just suppressed them. This journey is not easy but it is worth it.
