About me

Greetings! My name is Cheryl D. Nelson. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), in the state of Pennsylvania. My clinical background is in Community Mental Health. I have worked with adults, adolescents, and children for over 10 years in school, home and outpatient settings; both virtually and in-person. I have experience working with a variety of issues including anxiety, depression, grief, loss trauma and relationship issues. I have a wonderful husband and am the proud mother of 2 awesome adult children! My hobbies include reading, cooking and doing brain-game puzzles. My television tastes include documentaries, true crime stories and select reality television.

Get to know me

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

Our first session will consist of us getting to know one another. We will review and discuss the intake form together. I will ask clarifying questions about responses on your form. This will give you the opportunity to speak your truth and allow your voice to be heard. You will also have the opportunity to share any additional information that was not already discussed and ask any questions that you may have of me.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

My lived experience as a Black woman living in this society, combined with my educational and clinical training, qualify me to be your therapist. Some of the values that guide my practice are: Acceptance : meeting clients where they are Collaboration : working closely with my clients during their process Compassion : recognizing my client's suffering and being willing to help Hope: believing that people, situations and circumstances can improve Service: recognizing my responsibility and the importance of using my skills, abilities and talents to serve others.

The clients I'm best positioned to serve

My ideal clients are Black women who are actively navigating and overcoming personal challenges while simultaneously resisting the systemic pressures of a racist, sexist and inequitable society. They often encounter challenges in their homes, on their jobs, while seeking health care and in their places of worship. I am dedicated to providing a safe, affirming , and culturally responsive space where they can unpack individual struggles, cultivate resilience, process systemic trauma, and prioritize their own healing and personal growth.

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

As a Cognitive Behavioral Therapist, I help clients understand and explore the connection between their thoughts, their feelings and their behaviors. Often times, invalid, negative or unhealthy thoughts can form the basis for negative, harmful or unhealthy behaviors. By learning skills and techniques to change their thought patterns and processes, clients can decrease or eliminate undesirable behaviors.

Solution Focused Brief Treatment

Solution Focused Therapy focuses on a client's present and future circumstances rather then past traumas or problems. As a Solution Focused Therapist, I help clients identify their unique strengths, determine what is already working for them and help them build on their existing strengths and create actionable solutions to their problems.
