I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with over 25 years' experience working with individuals to help them identify issues that are impacting their mental well-being, their daily lives and relationships. I am based in Florida and have worked with clients dealing with anxiety, depression, discrimination due to ethnic background, stress and trauma. I also work with college students as well helping them cope with relationship issues, stressors and any other issues they may be encountering. I enjoy the dynamic relationship a therapist and client develop working together to find solutions to improving their lives.
After our brief introduction to one another, I will work with the client to get an overall picture of the issue/s and complete an intake. This will better help me and the client develop a treatment plan that will guide our future sessions. Most clients benefit from weekly sessions but some may only need twice a month, but this is explored and agreed upon during our sessions.
I believe my greatest strengths are creating an open and welcoming environment for clients to feel safe to share anything. I am direct when it is needed and have a way of helping clients see their issues for themselves and decide how to best challenge their beliefs. I am successful in helping clients identify their struggles, behaviors and actions that impact negatively on their daily lives and to find and implement more positive thoughts, feelings and solutions to improve their daily lives.
I specialize in working with clients who have anxiety, depression, addiction and family issues/dysfunction. I also work with clients who have experienced discrimination and trauma due to their ethnic background. This includes working with clients from other countries who have recently moved to the USA or have been here for some time but are still experiencing discrimination. I enjoy working one on one with clients to help them identify negative thoughts, feelings and behaviors and then helping them develop solutions that work best in their daily lives to improve their mental health and well-being.
I use CBT to help the person understand and reveal the relationship between their thoughts, feelings and beliefs and then how you behave based on these relationships. I have found this most successful with clients. The techniques I use depends on what the client brings to the table as the issues, behaviors and thoughts they are exhibiting. All therapy is done in a judgement free environment. CBT is great in working with clients who have anxiety, depression and PTSD.
Some clients are very focused and I find that Reality therapy is a very goal oriented and solution focused type of therapy that helps individuals look at their issues in a realistic manner and take responsibility for their choices and actions. It helps you identify the patterns in your life that work to your benefit and identify those destructive patterns that need to be eliminated. All work is done in a judgement free environment. I have also utilized this technique with clients who present as grounded in facts and eager to seek out solutions for their problems.
Person centered therapy can be very useful in working with individuals who have anxiety, depression, PTSD and many other issues. I utilize this type of therapy to help empower the client to take ownership of their own well-being. The therapist and client work together without judgement to identify issues and the therapist helps the client develop solutions.
I utilize Motivational Interviewing with some patients, especially those who might need some challenging to their thinking and actions they are taking in their life. MI is a great way to meet the person where they are at but to also help challenge unproductive actions, behaviors and thoughts that are not working to the benefit of the client. This technique helps an individual identify the problems and develop solutions that they feel will work best for them in their daily life. It helps the client see the contradictions between their desired behavior and ways they may be behaving and then confront those dichotomies and work on the ambivalence they may be exhibiting in changing their behavior.
I have worked for many years with clients who have suffered traumas in their lives. I have utilized this therapy working with both men and women throughout my career. If a client has been exposed to neglect, abuse, discrimination, violence, etc as either a child or an adult, it can have long lasting impacts on their current life and well-being. It is important to identify these issues and work on individual empowerment, life choices, safety and eventually ways to incorporate healthy behaviors into your daily life.
