Enid Peterson
Hi! I'm a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, receiving my MSW from UConn School of Social Work and have been practicing in the field for over 40 years. I have had the opportunity to work with many diverse populations from young children to seniors in outpatient and inpatient settings. My style is relational, as I believe that personal growth flourishes in the connections created within the context of relationships.
First session
In our first session together, I will answer any questions you may have about my experience and expertise and I look forward to understanding what your life experiences have been that led to you seeking support when you did. We will then discuss what your therapy goals are in order to develop a plan for your progress.
Strengths
Growing up, my mother loved to tell the story about when she dropped me off on the first day of kindergarten, I waved goodbye to her and helped the teacher comfort all the children who were crying when their parents left them. If there is such a thing as a "compassion gene" I believe I was born with it, since helping others heal has been a calling for as long as I can remember.
Ideal clients
I love working with women who feel disempowered due to circumstances in their lives that they feel have no control over, as well as with seniors who are seeking help from someone who shares their years of life experience. I have developed a "toolbox" of skill-based interventions to manage anxiety, depression and chronic pain and I am eager to share what I have learned and practice myself.
Treatment methods
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
CBT is an evidence-based model I have used for many years to help clients identify negative thought patterns and develop positive coping strategies. It is also effective in transforming fixed mindsets to growth mindsets, often opening up endless possibilities.
Relational
I have always described myself as a relational therapist, trained in the "Risking Connection" curriculum. This philosophy of intervention is trauma informed and focuses on personal development through mutuality and connection within the context of relationships.
Eclectic
Since I have never believed that "one size fits all," my approach to helping my clients heal is to view each person as having unique circumstances that require customized treatment plans. I utilize modalities including mindfulness, mind body connection, somatic experiencing, Emotional Freedom Technique and polyvagal techniques.
