Welcome. My name is Dr. Susan Boyer. If you are reading this, chances are you're dealing with something that has been weighing heavily on you. You're not alone and together we can help you find lasting relief, growth, a sense of well-being and meaningful change. I am a Licensed Psychologist (Ph.D.) with 30+ years experience working with clients. My practice consists of working with adults (ages 18 and up) doing telehealth.
In your first session, we'll talk about some of the challenges or struggles you're currently facing. We'll go over things that you've tried in the past that may or may not have worked. We'll come up with some ideas about what you would like to work on, going forward. You will have the opportunity to see whether my therapeutic style feels like a good fit. Some clients feel satisfied with improvements made in a few sessions, while others remain in therapy for a longer period of time, in order to more fully address their issues. Some clients attend sessions on a weekly basis, while others attend therapy more or less frequently, depending on their needs and treatment goals. These are options for you to consider.
I provide a safe, supportive space where you will feel seen, heard and understood. It is my priority to meet each client where they are in their process, to consider their unique set of life circumstances and to tailor their treatment accordingly.
Life constantly provides new challenges. You may find yourself feeling down, anxious, overwhelmed and unable to move forward. I find it tremendously gratifying supporting clients seeking help with anxiety and depression, grief and loss, life transitions, relationship and self esteem issues and stress.
I believe each client is unique. My approach to treatment is Eclectic, allowing for treatment to be tailored to your individual needs.
I encourage clients to pay attention to and focus their thoughts, despite the inevitable ways minds wander. The goal is to recognize intrusive/unhelpful thoughts as mere mental events and to learn to view them objectively in a way that is loving and kind to oneself. Through practice, I teach clients to develop the ability to alter their thoughts, remain in the present moment, and not become stuck in negative thought patterns. Over time, clients become better equipped to treat themselves with patience, empathy and kindness.
Using psychodynamic therapy, past experiences are explored and unconscious thoughts and feelings are brought to light and discussed.
Trauma-informed therapy focuses on the root causes of distress by asking, “What happened to you?” instead of “What’s wrong with you?” This approach emphasizes understanding your complete history — both past and present — to provide effective therapeutic care. Trauma-informed care involves being mindful of potential triggers to prevent re-traumatization, ensuring a safer therapeutic journey.
