(she/her)
My name is Swan Roberts. I am a licensed therapist, LCSW (licensed clinical social worker). I love helping people through my work and I have been doing this for 6 years. I decided to become a therapist because I had a therapist that helped me ease through the transition of getting out medically from active duty army service, which inspired me to follow this career path. It takes courage to make the decision of facing the things that are causing you turmoil, including trauma, and I am glad you are here. I look forward to meeting you and help you transform your life through healing evidence based interventions.
When you experience trauma and stress, there is a tendency to develop a zoomed-in view of the problem and blame yourself for it even when you know it is not your fault, the feeling of shame and not enoughness persists. I will help you gain back or start trusting yourself, to feel calm and secure and live your life fully per your own values and goals. In our first session, I will get to know you and the reasons that bring you to therapy, as well as the positive qualities that keep you going. Depending on your preference, we can explore past trauma, but we can also wait for future sessions when we have more rapport and trust in our therapeutic partnership. I use Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) techniques to resource safety, increase positive coping skills, and identify the negative cognition that Feels true to you even when you know it is not true in your mind, such as feeling not good enough, fearing abandonment, blaming yourself or taking responsibility for others' actions, and not feeling safe even when you know you are safe. I also apply Internal family systems to unburden heavy parts of yourself that perhaps have resulted to behaviors that were once helpful but no longer serve you, and you'd like to heal so you can feel like yourself again. I am learning Somatic Experiencing (SE) and I use this intervention to help you complete trauma responses that are stuck in your nervous system, to help restore safety and calm once again.
In my work as a therapist, I like to help you learn to be in tune with your gut feeling, and intuition, to develop trust in your own judgement, which is often lost with trauma. I help you gain perspectives that can help you transform your life and relationships by healing the parts of yourself that may struggle with boundaries, and taking things personally, or attachment issues that lead to anxiety or avoidance. It is a gradual process, and it is not linear, but it is possible to heal as I have seen this in my own life, and with many of my clients. I look forward to meeting you and go to a pace that feels right for you.
I have worked with many clients who are struggling with difficult emotions, or numbness, especially after a big event has happened in their lives; and I help them process their feelings and reframe negative beliefs that in turn usually result in a positive change of behavior.
EMDR
I use EMDR to help clients process past trauma by shifting any held negative beliefs through the use of this evidence-based neurocognitive bilateral stimulation approach. EMDR helps you stay grounded while reprocessing past memories, put these memories in the past (long term memory versus reliving them), and increase the part of your brain that has Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) abilities, so that your perspective truly changes in how true it feels to you, increasing feelings of calm and safety, feeling like you are enough, and reducing fear of abandonment.
Internal Family Systems (IFS)
I use IFS to help clients gain insight and help lessen the weight that parts of the self may carry due to difficult past experiences. Some of these parts of yourself helped you survive in the past, but perhaps there are some beliefs or behaviors that no longer serve you, and we help heal them through IFS.
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
I use CBT to help clients challenge beliefs that may be negatively impacting their feelings and therefore respective behavior.

Her experience with PTSD and EMDR/IFS is what drew me to Swan. What has helped me stay is her recognition and compassion of my late autism diagnosis, her flexibility to work around my work schedule, and direct/efficient communication. From our first meeting, I have felt respected for speaking up for my needs and that has made me feel safe to be vulnerable with her.
