Hello!!! I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) based in Indiana. I received my Masters form Indiana University in 2006 and have been practicing since then, but was involved in social work type work 5 years prior to obtaining my Masters. I am a trauma certified specialist. I have worked with all ages, from birth to older adults; including those in foster care, foster parents, adoptive parents, adoptive children, and parents involved with the Department of Child Services. I have helped all ages overcome barriers to their mental health and develop coping strategies for everyday life. I have helped families build stronger relationships, and have helped older adults, cope with life experiences.
In our first therapy session, you can expect a welcoming and confidential environment free of distractions. Here is what would typically happen: 1. Introduction. I will introduce myself, my background, answer any questions and what you can expect from therapy. I will then like for you to introduce yourself and share as much or little as you might like. 2. Confidentiality. I will discuss what this means, the limits and ensure there is understanding about the importance of privacy in a therapeutic relationship. 3. Gather Information. Why did you come to therapy? What are your current challenges? I may asked more clarifying questions. 4. Setting Goals. We will work together to created some goals, a road map for your sessions. Prioritize your needs. 5. Next Steps. By the end of the session, we will have started to develop a rapport, have some goals to work on, and make sure you feel at ease about the process.
As a social worker, and a LCSW, I have had to often pivot my "game plan", making me more flexible. We have all had life experiences that have brought us to where we are in life, and I feel even though you are here for therapy, we both can learn and grow from one another. I am non judgmental, non bias, and an open book, what you see is what you get. I can be too honest, which is both a strength and a weakness. But I am caring, and warm, and will do what I can to created that type of environment in a virtual setting. I have worked for 10 years in child welfare and have been both a provider, and a foster/adoptive parent. In being on both sides, I have a different perspective then most, and it helps me in helping other going through a similar process.
I truly love working with all ages groups, as each age offers different challenges with a different look on life. I create a safe and supportive place for anyone to be able to express themselves in a non judgmental way. However with virtual, it would be more difficult to work with a younger population.
CBT helps individuals identify and challenge unhelpful thoughts and taking those overwhelming feelings and/or thoughts and breaking it down into more manageable parts. Its is talking therapy in a structured, supportive, non judgmental and safe way.
