Pam Dorman
Hello, My name is Pam, and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I've been working in the field of mental health in various roles for about 10 years now. I have done individual, group and family/systemic therapy and I have worked as a Clinical Director in a community mental health agency. Most recently, I've worked in a correctional setting. My priority in treatment is establishing a strong foundation of trust with my clients. I am laid back and relatable in many ways, and I tend to work from a strengths-based perspective. YOU are the expert on your life and we will build off of inherent strengths and skills you already possess.
First session
In the first session, it is all about getting to know you and helping you to feel comfortable before you open up your life to me. There will be lots of "tell me about your parents/friends/job/etc." questions that leave it open for you to share as much or as little as you'd like. There will certainly be some basic information that is necessary to get an understanding of your life and some discussion around what brought you to treatment; however, the first session is essentially an opportunity to see if you and I would make a great team as you navigate through addressing barriers and working towards your goals in treatment.
Strengths
My greatest strength in treatment is my relatability and my ability establish and maintain a strong therapeutic relationship with my clients. I strongly believe the strongest predictor of success in mental health is the level of trust between client and therapist. For this reason, I offer a very relaxed and informal approach to my sessions that creates a warm, relaxed atmosphere.
Ideal clients
Clients who may be best served by my treatment style and methods would include those who have experienced trauma, anxiety and/or depression, grief or significant life changes. Clients who have goals to process their past experiences, make sense of their current issues and build skills to focus on creating a fulfilling future could likely benefit from treatment sessions with me.
Treatment methods
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
I use this method of psychotherapy in practice to identify and address dysfunctional thought patterns and behaviors. Together, we identify and challenge thought patterns and behaviors that create barriers in our life in a way that allows us to change our thinking to promote more productive and useful thoughts and behaviors. This is a gentle approach that allows us to self-reflect and learn new ways of managing our thoughts, which ultimately impact our feelings and behaviors.
