About me

I’m Dennis Grau, a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in New Jersey. I provide a supportive, compassionate, and nonjudgmental space where clients can work through anxiety, depression, relationship concerns, life transitions, stress, and self-esteem challenges. My approach is collaborative and tailored to each individual, drawing from evidence-based methods such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), solution-focused strategies, and strengths-based counseling to help clients build practical skills and create meaningful, lasting change.

Get to know me

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

In our first session, we’ll take time to get to know each other and talk about what brought you to therapy, the concerns you would like to address, and what you hope to gain from counseling. I’ll ask questions about your current situation, background, strengths, and goals while giving you space to share at a pace that feels comfortable. We’ll also begin identifying areas to focus on and discuss a treatment approach that fits your needs. My goal is for you to leave the first session feeling heard, supported, and clear about the next steps in our work together.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

I bring warmth, empathy, patience, and a practical, solution-focused mindset to each session. I work to create a space where clients feel genuinely heard, respected, and comfortable being themselves without fear of judgment. I also focus on helping clients understand the patterns behind their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors while developing realistic tools they can use outside of therapy. My approach stands out because I balance compassionate support with honest reflection, encouragement, and evidence-based strategies tailored to each client’s individual needs and goals.

The clients I'm best positioned to serve

My ideal client is an adult who may be struggling with anxiety, depression, stress, relationship challenges, self-esteem, anger, or a major life transition and is ready to better understand themselves and make meaningful changes. They do not need to have everything figured out—they simply need a willingness to be open, reflect, and participate in the therapeutic process. I especially enjoy working with clients who want practical tools, greater emotional awareness, healthier relationships, and increased confidence in managing life’s challenges.

My treatment methods

Eclectic

I use an eclectic approach by drawing from several evidence-based therapy methods and tailoring treatment to each client’s individual needs, goals, personality, and circumstances. Rather than relying on one method for every concern, I may incorporate strategies from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), solution-focused therapy, strengths-based approaches, mindfulness, and supportive counseling. This flexibility allows us to use the techniques that are most helpful to you while adjusting the approach as your needs and goals evolve.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help clients understand how their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors influence one another. Together, we identify unhelpful thinking patterns, explore how they affect daily life, and develop more balanced and constructive ways of responding. I also incorporate practical coping strategies, problem-solving skills, behavioral changes, and between-session exercises so clients can apply what they learn in therapy to real-life situations.

Acceptance and commitment (ACT)

I use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to help clients develop a healthier relationship with difficult thoughts and emotions rather than feeling controlled by them. We work on increasing self-awareness, practicing acceptance, and identifying personal values that can guide meaningful choices. I also help clients build psychological flexibility so they can move toward what matters most to them, even when discomfort, uncertainty, or difficult emotions are present.

Solution Focused Brief Treatment

I use Solution-Focused Brief Therapy to help clients identify their strengths, recognize what is already working, and develop practical steps toward meaningful change. Rather than focusing only on problems, we clarify goals, explore exceptions and past successes, and build on existing resources and abilities. This approach helps clients create realistic, achievable strategies they can begin using right away.

Christian Counseling

I use Christian counseling for clients who would like their faith to be part of the therapeutic process. With the client’s permission, I may incorporate prayer, Scripture, spiritual reflection, and discussion of Christian values alongside evidence-based counseling strategies. My goal is to respect each client’s beliefs while helping them address emotional challenges, strengthen hope, find meaning, and make choices that are consistent with both their personal goals and their faith.
