Hello! My name is Ashley Harlan and I am a licensed professional counselor and certified advanced alcohol and drug counselor who specializes in working with adolescents and young adults who have experienced trauma, substance use, life stressors and transitions, depression, and anxiety. I received a Master of Science of Education in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Duquesne University in 2017. Since then, I have worked in both residential and outpatient settings, conducting individual, group, and family therapy sessions. I have previously served as the Clinical Supervisor for an inpatient rehab for adolescents. Additionally, I am adjunct faculty for two online colleges, teaching psychology-related topics.

Get to know me

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

During a first session, I want to hear as much about you as I can. I typically ask questions surrounding mental health history and treatment, family dynamics, goals for counseling, your perspectives about yourself and others, etc.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

I have gained extensive education and experience in treating adjudicated and dependent adolescents who struggle with substance use and mental health related concerns. I have also found a passion for working with young adults who wish to improve boundaries and build self-esteem.

The clients I'm best positioned to serve

Adolescents and young adults with anxiety, depression, trauma, and/or substance use.

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

I have found CBT to be helpful in challenging perspectives and thoughts that hold us back from achieving the change we want. I also acknowledge its limitations, as not everything is as simple as "just think differently!"

EMDR

I have been trained in EMDR for 4 years. EMDR is a great modality to process trauma amongst other concerns without having to talk extensively about the issue.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT)

While I do not strictly adhere to formal DBT protocols, I love teaching skills from DBT such as mindfulness, grounding, distress tolerance, and emotional regulation skills.

Motivational Interviewing

Motivational Interviewing is heavily intertwined in my approach. I believe the client is the authority on themselves and the therapist is a resource to help guide thoughts and/or discussion about change. This modality encourages client's to assess which changes they are ready to commit to and talk through parts of themselves which they are still figuring out.
