I am Dr. Monica Sam, a doctoral-prepared Advanced Nurse Practitioner with double board certifications in Family Nurse Practice and Psychiatric Mental Health Practice. I attended Wilmington University in Wilmington, Delaware for all my graduate, post-graduate, and doctoral education. I also hold a Masters degree in Business Administration. In my practice, I work with my clients to reach their personal optimal functional goals through behavioral modifications and medication management. I foster an environment of trust and transparency which is crucial for a successful provider/client relationship.
During the initial encounter, clients will undergo a therapeutic assessment for a baseline profile to help establish the appropriate care plan. The assessment process includes a brief history of why the client is seeking mental health care, the history of the present illness, psychiatry history, medical history, family history of mental illness, social history/support, current medication, and treatment regimen, if any. This will help me plan the best treatment approach for you. The initial encounter also aims to establish a trusting and therapeutic environment that is non-judgemental.
I have been a nurse for thirty years, amassing experience in various clinical setups. I have six years of practice experience as an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner, with almost two years as a Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. My greatest strengths are delivering quality health care to a diverse patient population with empathy while promoting an environment of nurturing and healing. I believe in empowering the patient and their loved ones to participate in care which enforces mutual interest and leads to enhanced mental health to improve the client's quality of life.
I am best positioned to serve clients with mental health disorders such as major depressive disorders (MDD), anxiety disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorders (ADHD), post-traumatic stress disorders (PTSD) mood disorders, coping skills, bipolar disorders, sleep disorders, and medication management. My clients usually have mental health illnesses that make them feel helpless and hopeless. My practice approach is helping clients express their feelings and gain control of their emotions and challenging behaviors.
I use non-judgmental therapeutic communication to help my patients to marry their feelings with their thoughts and to adjust their behaviors to align with their values.
