Shawn Taylor
Hi there, my name is Shawn Taylor. I’m here to help. Are you experiencing anger or frustration because important needs and expectations remain unmet? Are you struggling to balance your relationships, work, health, and personal responsibilities? Do you feel anxious or uncertain about the direction your life is taking? Have unhealthy habits or recurring patterns kept you from becoming the person you know you are capable of becoming?
However, most lack the logistical “know-how” to resolve Internal Family System disorders caused by trauma, addictions, anger, and anxiety to effect permanent change within their lives.
Throughout my career, I have consistently observed that most people genuinely want to change. What is often missing is not motivation, but a practical understanding of how to turn insight and intention into consistent, sustainable action. For more than 20 years, I have studied human behavior from three professional perspectives: criminal justice investigator, educator, and mental health practitioner. These experiences have taught me to look beyond symptoms and identify the underlying experiences, beliefs, emotional responses, and behavioral patterns that may keep people stuck. My approach helps you understand those patterns, strengthen emotional and behavioral self-regulation, process unresolved experiences, develop healthier coping strategies, and build greater personal agency. Rather than simply asking, “What is wrong?” we also explore: “What happened, what patterns developed, what keeps them active, and what can you begin doing differently?” My goal is to help you translate greater self-awareness into healthier decisions, behaviors, relationships, and outcomes—with greater clarity, resilience, confidence, and self-direction. I earned my MA in Counseling Psychology from Houston Graduate School of Theology in 2014 and have served as a Houston Police Department Criminal Justice Investigator, Spring ISD Career & Technology Educator, and independent Mental Health Practitioner. First session
In our first session, we’ll begin with introductions and create a comfortable, nonjudgmental space to discuss what brings you to therapy. We’ll explore the challenges you’re experiencing, important life experiences, and the patterns affecting your thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and relationships. Together, we’ll identify your immediate concerns, values, needs, strengths, and goals for change. By the end of the session, my goal is for you to have greater clarity about where you are, where you want to go, and the initial steps toward getting there. This understanding will help us develop a personalized treatment plan to guide our work in future sessions.
Strengths
One of the greatest strengths I bring to therapy is the ability to combine compassion with curiosity, pattern recognition, practical education, and action-oriented strategies for change. My professional background as a criminal justice investigator, educator, and mental health practitioner has taught me to listen carefully, look beneath the surface, ask meaningful questions, and help individuals recognize patterns that may be difficult to see from within their own experiences. I believe effective therapy involves more than simply identifying what is wrong. Together, we explore what happened, what you learned to believe or do in response, what continues to keep those patterns active, and what you can begin doing differently. This process can help you develop greater self-awareness, regulate difficult emotions, challenge unhelpful thinking and behavioral patterns, strengthen personal agency, and translate insight into practical steps toward meaningful change. I also bring an educator’s mindset into the therapeutic relationship. I want you to understand the “why” behind what you are experiencing while developing practical skills you can apply beyond the therapy room. My goal is not to create dependence on therapy, but to help you strengthen your capacity to recognize patterns, evaluate your responses, make intentional decisions, and increasingly become an active participant in directing your own life. Seeking therapy can naturally bring uncertainty or apprehension. I strive to provide a respectful, collaborative, and nonjudgmental environment grounded in compassion and unconditional positive regard, while integrating evidence-informed therapeutic approaches appropriate to your individual needs. Ultimately, my approach is designed to **inspire, counsel, guide, and teach**—helping you move from insight to action and from recurring patterns toward healthier choices, stronger relationships, greater resilience, and a clearer sense of direction.
Ideal clients
I enjoy working with individuals who want to develop a stronger **internal locus of control**—a greater sense of personal agency, self-direction, and confidence in their ability to influence the direction of their lives. My ideal clients are motivated to grow and know they are capable of more, but may not yet have the insight, strategies, or practical tools to create sustainable change. They often feel stuck, overwhelmed, anxious, or uncertain about the life narrative they are creating. They are ready to better understand the patterns influencing their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors; clarify their values, needs, and motivations; and translate greater self-awareness into intentional action. Ultimately, I enjoy helping clients move from feeling controlled by circumstances and recurring patterns toward becoming active participants in their own lives—developing greater emotional regulation, healthier choices, personal agency, and confidence in their ability to create meaningful change.
Treatment methods
Person-centered (Rogerian)
I use unconditional positive regard to create a safe, nonjudgmental therapeutic relationship where clients can explore themselves honestly without feeling defined by their struggles, mistakes, or past experiences. Within that environment, we identify the **Values, Needs, and Drives** influencing their thoughts, emotions, relationships, and behaviors. Together, we examine where these core motivations are being fulfilled, neglected, conflicted, or expressed through unhealthy coping patterns. This deeper self-awareness helps clients understand not only what they are doing, but why particular patterns continue. From there, therapy becomes increasingly action-oriented. Clients learn to regulate emotional responses, challenge patterns that no longer serve them, clarify what genuinely matters, and develop healthier behaviors that align with their values and legitimate needs. My goal is to help clients move toward greater self-acceptance, personal agency, and actualization—transforming insight into intentional choices and behaviors that support a healthier, more authentic, and self-directed life.
