About me

Hi, I’m Megan Cannone, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW-C), Certified Oncology Social Worker (OSW-C), and Oncology Patient Navigator (OPN-CG). For more than 15 years, I have dedicated my career to supporting individuals and families through some of life’s most challenging moments, with a focus on oncology, chronic illness, grief, and end-of-life care. I earned my MSW from Western Carolina University in 2009 and have since worked across diverse settings, including psychiatric care, hospice, oncology navigation, and private practice. My experience includes years in hospice and palliative care, where I walked alongside patients and families through the complexities of serious illness, as well as my work at the Ulman Foundation, where I supported young adults with cancer and facilitated community-based support groups. Currently, I provide psychotherapy through Grow Therapy and serve as a clinical supervisor for social workers pursuing licensure. My approach to therapy is relationship-centered, grounded in empathy, and informed by evidence-based practices. I strive to create a safe, collaborative space where clients feel heard, supported, and empowered to navigate life’s challenges. Whether you are coping with illness, grief, anxiety, or a major life transition, I work to help you build resilience, find clarity, and discover pathways toward healing. Beyond my clinical work, I am actively involved in professional organizations, serve on the Board of Directors for the Hospice & Palliative Care Network of Maryland, and volunteer within my local community. If you’re seeking a therapist who combines professional expertise with compassion and authenticity, I would be honored to support you on your journey toward growth and well-being.

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

Beginning therapy can feel like a big step, and it’s normal to feel a mix of hope, relief, and even uncertainty. My goal for our first session is to create a safe, welcoming space where you feel comfortable sharing at your own pace. We’ll start with introductions and some conversation to help you feel at ease. I’ll explain how therapy works, review confidentiality, and answer any questions you may have about the process. I want you to know that therapy is a collaborative relationship — you are the expert on your life, and I am here to support and guide you as we work together. During this session, I’ll ask some questions to better understand what brought you to therapy, what challenges you’re facing, and what goals you hope to achieve. This may include exploring your current concerns, past experiences, and the supports or stressors in your life. I may also ask about your physical health, relationships, and coping strategies, since these areas often influence emotional well-being. There are no “right” or “wrong” answers — this is simply a chance for me to get to know you and for you to share what feels important. You can expect me to listen attentively, without judgment, and to reflect back what I hear so we can clarify your needs together. Many clients say they leave the first session feeling heard, understood, and relieved to have taken that initial step. By the end of our session, we will begin shaping a plan tailored to your needs. This may include setting therapy goals, identifying priorities, and discussing the approaches or strategies that may be most helpful for you. Some people come into the first session with clear goals in mind; others need time to sort them out — both are completely okay. It’s also important for you to use this session to get a feel for me and my style. Therapy works best when you feel comfortable with your therapist. I welcome your feedback, questions, and honesty — whether about what’s helpful or what you might need differently. Above all, the first session is about building connection and trust. You don’t have to share everything all at once; we’ll move at a pace that feels right for you. My role is to walk alongside you, offering compassion, perspective, and tools to support your healing and growth. Taking the first step can be the hardest part. If you’re here, you’ve already begun.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

One of my greatest strengths as a therapist is my ability to meet clients where they are with compassion, respect, and understanding. I believe that therapy works best when it feels like a safe, supportive partnership rather than a one-sided process. My clients often share that they feel truly heard and understood, without judgment, and that this allows them to open up in ways they haven’t been able to before. I bring over 15 years of experience in the fields of oncology, hospice, mental health, and patient navigation. This background has given me a unique ability to sit with people in their most difficult moments — whether facing illness, grief, anxiety, or major life transitions. I am skilled at holding space for both pain and hope, helping clients make sense of overwhelming emotions while also finding resilience and meaning. Another strength of my work is my integrative and flexible approach. I draw from evidence-based methods such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), mindfulness, and supportive counseling. But I don’t believe in a “one-size-fits-all” model. Instead, I collaborate with each client to find strategies that align with their goals, values, and comfort level. This means therapy is always tailored to your unique needs and pace. What often stands out about my approach is the way I blend clinical expertise with authenticity and warmth. Clients can expect practical tools and insights, but also a genuine connection that makes therapy feel approachable and real. Many of the people I work with are navigating complex health concerns or grief, and they often tell me that having a therapist who understands both the emotional and medical landscape makes a meaningful difference. I also bring a strengths-based perspective to my work. I believe that even in times of struggle, people carry resilience, wisdom, and capacity for growth. Part of my role is to help you recognize and build on these inner resources so that you can move forward with greater confidence and clarity. Ultimately, my greatest strength lies in helping clients feel less alone and more empowered in their journey. Whether you are seeking a space to process emotions, learn new coping strategies, or find a path forward during a difficult season, I am here to walk alongside you with both compassion and skill.

The clients I'm best positioned to serve

I specialize in supporting individuals who are navigating the emotional challenges that arise when life feels uncertain, overwhelming, or out of their control. Many of my clients come to therapy carrying the weight of anxiety, grief, or major life transitions. Some are living with or recovering from serious medical conditions such as cancer or other chronic illnesses, while others are supporting loved ones through those experiences. As a Certified Oncology Social Worker and Patient Navigator, I am especially positioned to help people who are balancing both the physical and emotional impact of illness. I understand the unique ways health concerns can affect mental health, relationships, identity, and one’s outlook on the future. My clients often share that they feel relief in working with someone who “gets it” without having to explain every detail. I also work with individuals facing grief and loss, whether related to the death of a loved one, the end of a relationship, or the loss of a sense of self during times of transition. Clients often come to me when they feel stuck in cycles of worry, sadness, or exhaustion and want tools to cope more effectively. The clients I serve are often motivated by a desire to feel more grounded, resilient, and hopeful. They may be looking for a space to process emotions, make sense of difficult experiences, or learn healthier ways to manage stress and uncertainty. Some are seeking strategies and guidance; others are simply looking for a safe place to be heard and supported. If you are navigating illness, caregiving, grief, anxiety, or a significant life change, I am here to walk alongside you. Together, we will focus on building strength, clarity, and pathways toward healing that feel meaningful to you.
