R. Lolita Ottley
Hello and Welcome! Hopefully, we can work together to get you closer to your goals! I am a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist who has been in the field for 18 years working with a range of populations. I earned my bachelor's degree from Tuskegee University with a major in Psychology.
While everyone is unique, I've found that clients typically start making measurable progress between 4-8 sessions of our work together.
I then received my master's degree from Barry University in Miami, Florida with a major in Counseling, with dual specialization in Marriage & Family Therapy & Mental Health Counseling. My goal is to provide a safe, comforting, yet, firm environment for clients to process current challenges and understand how therapy can aid in welcomed outcomes.
First session
During our first session together, we will discuss therapy expectations, treatment goals and current symptoms. the first sessions is more of and introduction and information gathering meeting.
Strengths
My target populations include adolescents, young adults, and families. I feel that my strengths are rooted in transition periods for individuals struggling to navigate their current situations. Many individuals seek treatment when they are "stuck". Having the space and support to navigate life's challenges , can make a huge difference in someone's life.
Ideal clients
In my practice, I have had successful outcomes while working with adolescents, young adults and adult clients.
Origin story
There has always been a stigma that surrounds mental health treatment in Black and minority cultures. As a teenager, I realized the need for mental health support in my community as well as the lack of resources.
Treatment methods
Solution-Focused Brief Treatment
Being trained in postmodern therapies, I have utilized SFT throughout my career. This allows client's to find the exception to their challenges. Together, we will identify the problem and work toward resolving the problem by also identifying solutions to alleviate the clients unwanted symptoms.
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
CBT is utilized during session to "connect the dots". I have learned that when clients are able to connect thoughts, behaviors and consequences, it helps to reframe their thinking.
