Virginia Massey
I served in the U.S. Navy for 11 years, an experience that strengthened my resilience, discipline, and commitment to helping others navigate life's challenges. I am currently a Licensed Professional Counselor with over eight years of experience working with both adults and children experiencing depression, stress, anger, anxiety, substance use, low self-esteem, and other mental health concerns. My approach is client-centered and strength-based, and I believe in partnering with each client to develop an individualized treatment plan that builds on their strengths and supports their personal goals.
First session
My approach is client-centered and strength-based, with a focus on creating a supportive, collaborative therapeutic relationship. During our first session, we'll take time to get to know one another, discuss your concerns, explore your strengths, and identify what you hope to achieve through counseling. Together, we'll develop an individualized treatment plan tailored to your unique needs and goals, ensuring you feel supported and actively involved in your path toward growth and healing.
Strengths
I believe meaningful change happens when clients feel both supported and appropriately challenged. My greatest strength as a therapist is my ability to hold space for you—creating a safe, nonjudgmental environment where you can slow down, process your thoughts and emotions, and feel genuinely heard. I understand that healing doesn't happen on a timeline, so I meet you where you are while encouraging steady progress toward your goals. At times, I will gently challenge unhelpful patterns, beliefs, or behaviors when I believe it will foster growth and greater self-awareness. I also take a creative and flexible approach to therapy, incorporating a variety of interventions to keep sessions engaging and tailored to your unique needs rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all approach. My goal is to help you build practical skills, recognize your strengths, and develop the confidence to navigate life's challenges with resilience, clarity, and lasting change.
Ideal clients
My ideal clients are individuals who are struggling with life's challenges that have intensified symptoms of anxiety, depression, or overwhelming stress. These difficulties may be affecting their relationships, performance at work or school, and overall ability to cope with daily responsibilities. Many find themselves relying on unhealthy or maladaptive coping strategies that provide temporary relief but ultimately create additional challenges. They are seeking a supportive, nonjudgmental space to better understand themselves, develop healthier coping skills, and improve their emotional well-being. Together, we work to build resilience, strengthen relationships, and create meaningful, lasting change that supports a healthier and more fulfilling life.
Treatment methods
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help clients better understand how their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are connected. Sometimes, the way we think about a situation can increase stress, anxiety, or sadness and lead to behaviors that keep us feeling stuck. Together, we'll identify unhelpful thinking patterns, explore where they come from, and practice replacing them with more balanced and realistic perspectives. We'll also focus on developing practical coping skills and healthy habits that can improve your mood, relationships, and daily functioning.
