I began my career in social work in 1991 and brings more than three decades of clinical experience helping individuals and families navigate conflict, grief, trauma, and life transitions. A native Washingtonian, I earned my BA in Psychology from the University of Virginia and Master of Social Work from the University of Maryland at Baltimore. Throughout my career, I have worked extensively with biological and foster families, supporting permanency youth through reunification, adoption, and independent living. I served as Clinical Director of an intensive in-home program, providing leadership and oversight for interventions designed to strengthen and stabilize families at risk of abuse or neglect to prevent child welfare entry. As a certified grief recovery specialist, I facilitated 10-week grief support groups for those impacted by homicide. I served as Supervisory Social Worker at a non-public school, providing leadership and support for services to students with learning differences and emotional and behavioral challenges.

I was a contractor with an organization in which I facilitated 10-week grief groups for those impacted by homicide following my certification as a grief recovery specialist.

In July 2007, I founded Kayla’s Village, where I serve as Founder & CEO, dedicated to providing educational resources and support to empower individuals, families, professionals, and communities to heal and thrive. I am a practicing clinical social worker and supervisor providing counseling to individuals and couples. I serve as an adjunct professor at Trinity Washington University for undergraduate students, am on the Advisory Committee for the Center for Infant and Child Loss, and is an active member of Trinity AME Zion Church. I am the author of Mommie’s Bright Sunshine, published in November 2013, addressing resilience and hope as my belief is that trials, tragedies, and trauma need not define our future. I have dedicated my life and career to strengthening families, empowering communities, and helping others heal, grow, and thrive.

First session

During our intake session, I work ask pointed questions so that the best treatment plan may be developed. The following sessions will be more "clinical" as that is when the actual work will begin. I would be honored for you to allow me to be a part of your healing journey. As I want to help you to get what you need as quickly as possible, when you are ready to terminate or pause sessions, I will support that as you are the expert of your life.

Strengths

My biggest strengths are my engagement, humor, compassion, non-judgmental approach, and empathy. I have cared for children not born to me so I know how it is to incorporate others into my life. I, too, have experienced significant grief so I use my trauma to connect to pain my clients may be experiencing. I encourage my clients to share openly so that we can learn and grow from one another.

Ideal clients

I work best with individual and couples. If I feel I am not the best fit for you clinically and as an ethical provider, I will state that openly and work to connect you with someone who is more specialized to address your unique needs.

Treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

I have been trained in CBT as well as Motivational Interviewing and other therapeutic modalities. I take more than the required number of continuing education units to renew my license as I am interested in staying well-versed and enhancing my knowledge so that I may help my clients as quickly as possible whereby Solution-Focused Brief Therapy is utilized.
