I am Sarah Hewitt, a licensed, nationally certified, Clinical Mental Health Counselor (CMHC). I am licensed in Utah & Indiana. I have over 7 years of experience in providing mental health and behavioral interventions, in a variety of populations including children, families, and women. I have worked with clients with a wide range of experiences and mental health concerns some of which include depression, anxiety, relationships issues, parenting issues, behavior concerns, ADHD, trauma, complex PTSD, and compulsory disorders. I am available M-Th 7 am-2 pm EST. I encourage email communication regarding the therapy process, your questions, and any concerns. I generally check messages throughout the day; however, my practice hours are 7 am-2 pm EST Monday-Thursday. If you do not see a time in my schedule please reach out and let me know and we can work to look at the options together. Given the nature of this work, I am not always immediately available to respond. I will do my best to respond as promptly as I can, usually within 24 business hours. Weekends are an exception as I must include time for self-care, as should you! Because there may be times when I am unavailable to respond immediately, your patience when response times are long is greatly appreciated, as I am likely responding or attending to other clients or responsibilities. You are also welcome to schedule a live session ahead of time. Please remember that if you are in crisis or immediate need of support call 911 or local emergency services. You can also call 1-800-273-TALK (8255) to talk to someone right away!

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

In our first session together I will work to gather background information and work to understand your goals and expectations. This will help us to discuss and formulate a plan of action as I develop the treatment plan, with your involvement.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

I am a compassionate professional and my approach is mindfulness-based and solution-focused. I believe each client holds within them everything they need to resolve challenges, you are the expert on you and this is your journey. I provide a nonjudgmental space within which individuals and families can explore their options and approach individual issues.

My treatment methods

Acceptance and commitment (ACT)

ACT is used to help clients use acceptance and mindfulness strategies paired with commitment to actionable changes in behaviors and thinking. With commitment, clients will ideally be able to manage triggers and stressors more effectively. This happens through changes in language that help them make healthy contact with their experiences and emotions. With the intended outcomes resulting in greater clarity, self-understanding, and self-compassion.

Trauma-Focused CBT

Trauma-Focused CBT is used to reframe thinking around traumatic experiences and the effect they have on the here and now. Psychoeducation, coping skills, cognitive processing, and gradual exposure in measured ways are used to help clients learn to navigate triggers in a way that makes their life more manageable.

Attachment-based

Attachment-based treatment is used to conceptualize the framework for the client's working understanding of relationships, what they can expect from relationships, and how primary caregiver relationships affect these perceptions. I use my knowledge of this to build rapport in a way that aids the client in shifting those perceptions through the relationship I build with them. Having information about prior relationships and the instability in the attachments and effects of attachments throughout life impedes the trust mechanism. Helping clients regain trust in themselves, through their relationship with me. Using that relationship as the vehicle for learning to navigate trust again. Then ideally learning to develop trusting supportive relationships again outside the therapeutic setting.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

CBT is used as a structure to create the goals and the framework to support other techniques and methods. It aides clients in reframing thinking, building skills, and learning to navigate goal setting, consistency, and change.

Eclectic

I am eclectic in the work that I do, I work with clients to establish rapport, teach them about their neurobiology, the links between mental and physical health, and to learn to rebuild in the aftermath of hardship. I use a mind-body approach and address diet, sleep, exercise, neurobiology, somatics, and vagal nerve functions as well as the aforementioned techniques. I teach clients about the processes from the biological basis of behavior to the nature of things that have lead them to their current states. I work to help clients find self-understanding. Which allows them to overcome hardships through commitments to actionable changes that allow them to heal, holistically, harnessing their innate abilities.
