Dr. Ajibola Adekanye
I am Ajibola Adekanye, DNP, PMHNP-BC, a board-certified psychiatric nurse practitioner currently accepting new adult clients. I have over 15 years of experience treating depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, OCD, ADHD, personality disorders, and self-harm or suicidal thoughts.
I also pay close attention to how your culture, identity, family, and life story shape your mental health, and I intentionally incorporate those into our work together.
My approach combines thorough psychiatric evaluation, thoughtful medication management, and culturally sensitive, collaborative care so you feel heard, respected, and actively involved in your treatment.
First session
In your first session with me, you can expect a calm, structured, but conversational visit focused on understanding you as a whole person, not just a set of symptoms. We will start by talking about what brought you in, what you have been experiencing, and what you hope will change. I will ask about your mental health and medical history, past treatments or medications, important life events, and your supports, culture, and values, so your care reflects what matters most to you. I will explain my role, how medication management and follow-up visits work, and answer any questions you have about treatment options, confidentiality, and safety. Before we end, I will share my initial impressions, discuss possible next steps, and collaborate with you to create a starting plan that feels clear and manageable. My priority is that you leave the first session feeling heard, respected, and with a sense of direction and hope.
Strengths
Mmy approach is the balance of thorough, evidence-based care with warmth, cultural sensitivity, and collaboration. I take time to complete a careful psychiatric evaluation so that we are treating the right problem, not just chasing symptoms. My medication management is deliberate and transparent as I explain options, benefits, and side effects in plain language, move at a pace that feels safe, and adjust based on your feedback and lived experience. I also pay close attention to how your culture, identity, family, and life story shape your mental health, and I intentionally incorporate those into our work together. Clients often tell me they feel genuinely heard, not rushed, and that they better understand what is happening to them and why we are choosing certain treatments. Over time, many experience fewer symptoms, improved stability, and a stronger sense of control and hope, because we are making decisions together rather than having treatment “done to” them.
Ideal clients
Person-centered. Depression, anxiety, OCD, Bipolar Disorder, Schizophrenia. I apply various treatment modalities
Treatment methods
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
I integrate Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) into my treatment approach alongside medication management to provide comprehensive, evidence-based care for clients experiencing mood disorders, anxiety, trauma, and adjustment difficulties.
Dialectical Behavior (DBT)
I incorporate Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) into my treatment framework to provide holistic care. My approach emphasizes both psychopharmacological support and skills-based behavioral interventions, which together enhance symptom stabilization and promote long-term functional recovery.
Motivational Interviewing
Many clients present with concerns or doubts about starting or continuing psychiatric medications.
Person-centered (Rogerian)
This philosophy emphasizes respect for the individual’s autonomy, values, lived experiences, and personal goals—ensuring that treatment is collaborative, empowering, and tailored to each client’s unique needs.
Strength-Based
This method aligns with trauma-informed care and recovery-oriented practices, particularly when working with clients who have experienced chronic mental illness, adversity, or healthcare-related stigma.
