I earned my master’s degree from Maryville University in St. Louis, MO, and have since devoted my career to providing compassionate, evidence-based care. I expected that providing my demographic and intake information before the first session would help the provider understand who they were meeting with, and it seemed like he didn't review it. I was surprised that his first recommendation was to increase my medication rather than discuss or offer talk therapy options. When mental health providers suggest medication adjustments without even mentioning talk therapy, that’s concerning.
