My name is Molly Higgins and I'm a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) in the state of California. I have been doing therapy for almost 10 years and have worked with adults through telehealth since 2020, focusing on depression, anxiety, trauma, life transitions and stress. I have a background in community mental health, where I focused on strengthening parent-child relationships. I individualize treatment for each clients, using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Acceptance & Commitment Therapy, with a foundation of a person-centered approach.
In an initial session, my goals are to share a little about the process of therapy, and to learn a lot about my clients. Why are they seeking help, and why now ? What changes would they like to see in their lives and where are they feeling stuck? It's also very normal to feel anxious at the start of therapy, especially if clients have never been in therapy before, so I strive to help clients feel at ease through a new experience.
My primary strength as a provider is the relationship I build with my clients: a relationship built on trust, safety and mutual respect. I show up as my authentic self so that my clients can do the same, and I love to incorporate humor into the therapy space. My flexibility as a provider is also a strength- I love being able to adapt my approach for individual personalities and preferences and I so appreciate my client's feedback to me.
I typically work with young and middle-aged adults who are going through some big life transitions, whether it's a new baby, a shift in career, or the loss of a relationship. In times of stress, some familiar yet unhelpful coping strategies often surface- which can look like anxiety, depression, increased stress and more. I work to create a safe space for my clients to examine which parts of their lives are no longer serving them, and walk with clients in designing the life that better fits their values.
I utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to deepen my client's understanding of the relationship between their thoughts, feelings and behaviors so that they can make the modifications needed for lasting change. We also examine unhelpful and/or untrue thought patterns that may be leading to distress, and we dismantle limiting core beliefs that may have developed in childhood out of necessity.
I utilize Acceptance and Commitment Therapy in order to clarify my client's values so that we can make the changes needed for them to live a life that is in alignment with those values. ACT also has useful tools such as mindfulness, defusion, and acceptance that can help clients move forward in a way that feels good to them.
As an evidenced based intervention for trauma, Trauma-Focused CBT gives clients the tools needed to process trauma and reduce the emotional and behavioral difficulties that have resulted from that trauma. At a pace that feels safe, I utilize psychoeducation, relaxation, grounding, exposure, and cognitive processing to help clients move through their trauma and reduce long-term distress.
