Hello! My name is Zach Soohy. I am a PA licensed mental health counselor and have worked with clients in several mental health fields for the last 8 years. I own, operate, and counsel through my own LLC practice that specializes in helping clients work through trauma, abuse, and self-worth/self-esteem issues, though I also have worked with many other kinds of mental health and addiction based issues as well. I look forward to helping you as well if you desire! I understand that the decision to seek mental health counseling is often a challenging one for many people, but simply by considering it, you have taken a very positive step towards improving your life in noticeable and meaningful ways.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

I tend to run my first session a little differently than some counselor do. If you have ever been to counseling before and dread your first session because you fear you are going to have to go into an extensive history going all the way back to your childhood, I am happy to inform you that this will not be what the first session consists of! My desired goal is that all session, even the first session, should give the client something worthwhile. As such, I seek to dive right in to hearing, from you, what is important to you. With that information, we will create a treatment plan, goals for therapy, and a set up plan for how we are going to make those goals a reality. I pride myself on trying to make the first session one in which we get to work on what matters to you and on making the first session something to not dread, but to look forward to.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

I try and stay as up to date on mental health best practices as I can. As such, I read extensively on how to improve my craft as a counselor as I am always looking to improve my knowledge base for my clients so they can be assured that they are getting techniques that are tried, tested, and effective. Additionally, I am fascinated by how the brain works and do my best to explain to you not just the possible reasons for why you might be experiencing what you are experiencing, but also explaining what is going on in your brain while that event if happening. I believe that if you are paying to see a professional for an issue, you should know that the professional in question can "show their work".

My treatment methods

Eclectic

Eclectic therapy has become a very common type of therapy offered by many therapists for good reason! It allows a therapist to combine the most effective parts of clinically backed counseling methods and combine them into a powerful tool for healing. The methods below this tend to be the most common ones I combine. I have been using this approach for seven years in my practice.

Christian Counseling

*Please note that this counseling technique is available on request and is NOT employed for all clients unless requested. I graduated from Lancaster Bible College in 2017 with my degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, and have been using Christian Counseling techniques in my practice since then. If clients wish for me to employ this technique, the level of involvement is up to the client. I tend to utilize a hybrid approach combining Biblical wisdom with clinical best practices for mental health. Prayer during session can also be requested if desired.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy has always been one of the main styles of therapy I use given that it is a very clinically supported style of therapy with an excellent track rate of success. This type of therapy helps clients to overcome and understand logical traps their minds create that cause barriers to moving on with life goals. I have used this treatment therapy for eight years in my practice.

Existential

Existential counseling is mainly used for the treatment of grief, loss, and trauma/abuse counseling. Since these are some of the areas I work in most, this method of counseling can see a lot of use. Existential counseling addresses the "give-ins of human existence" (things all humans must address in some way at various points in their lives like, the eventuality of death, the concept of loneliness, control or loss there of, etc. I have been using this technique for eight years in my practice.

Mindfulness-Based Therapy

Mindfulness-based therapy has quickly become a personal favorite approach of mine that work mainly by helping clients learn three main skillsets: increasing awareness of the reasons they do what they do, improving acceptance of current life situations while working towards positive change, and fostering present focus in order to reduce anxiety that stems from dwelling too heavily on past trauma/events and/or fearing potential future outcomes that may not/may never come to pass. I have been utilizing this type of therapy for 2 years in my practice.
