About
Hi, I'm Melissa Mitchell, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, and I help adults navigate life's challenges with compassion, curiosity, and practical support. Whether you're working through trauma, anxiety, depression, relationship stress, or a significant life transition, I strive to create a safe, collaborative space where you feel heard, supported, and empowered to move toward the life you want to build.
First session
During our first session, my goal is to get to know you—not just the challenges that brought you to therapy, but also your strengths, experiences, and what you hope to achieve. We'll talk about your current concerns, relevant personal history, and any questions you have about the therapy process. There's no pressure to share everything at once; we'll move at a pace that feels comfortable for you. Together, we'll begin identifying your goals and discuss how we can work collaboratively to support your growth. My approach is warm, nonjudgmental, and grounded in evidence-based practices, with therapy tailored to your unique needs. I want you to leave our first session feeling heard, supported, and with a clearer understanding of how we can move forward together.
Strengths
One of my greatest strengths as a therapist is my ability to create a safe, compassionate, and nonjudgmental space where clients feel comfortable being themselves. I believe meaningful change begins with feeling heard and understood, so I approach therapy as a collaborative partnership built on trust, authenticity, honesty, and respect. Clients often find that I'm warm and supportive, while also being honest and direct when it's helpful. I believe therapy should be a place where you feel validated and challenged in a way that encourages growth. My goal is to provide thoughtful, compassionate feedback while helping you recognize patterns, build on your strengths, and move toward the life you want to create. With more than a decade of experience across outpatient mental health, hospital-based psychiatry, crisis intervention, and community settings, I bring a well-rounded perspective to supporting clients through a wide range of emotional and life challenges. I integrate evidence-based approaches—including CBT, DBT skills, motivational interviewing, trauma-informed care, and strengths-based practices—to tailor therapy to each client's unique needs, goals, and pace. What sets my practice apart is the balance of clinical expertise, genuine human connection, and honest communication. I strive to create an environment where clients feel supported enough to be vulnerable and empowered enough to make meaningful, lasting change.
Ideal clients
You may be a good fit for my practice if you're feeling overwhelmed by anxiety, stress, trauma, depression, relationship challenges, or a major life transition and you're looking for a therapist who offers both compassion and practical support. You may feel stuck in patterns that no longer serve you, unsure how to move forward, or simply exhausted from carrying so much on your own. My approach is collaborative, warm, and nonjudgmental. I believe therapy should be a space where you feel heard, understood, and comfortable being yourself. Together, we'll explore what's contributing to your current challenges while building practical skills to help you manage difficult emotions, improve relationships, strengthen resilience, and create meaningful, lasting change. Drawing from evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills, Motivational Interviewing, and trauma-informed care, I tailor treatment to your unique needs rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach. Clients who work with me often want to better understand themselves, develop healthier coping strategies, feel more confident navigating life's challenges, and build a life that feels more balanced and aligned with their values. Whether you're seeking support for a specific issue or looking for personal growth, my goal is to help you feel empowered, supported, and equipped with tools you can continue using long after therapy ends.
Treatment methods
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
Using CBT, I help clients better understand the connection between their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. We work together to identify patterns that may be keeping them stuck, challenge unhelpful beliefs, and develop healthier ways of responding to life's challenges. My goal is to provide practical tools that clients can apply in their everyday lives, not just during our sessions.
Compassion Focused
I incorporate compassion-focused techniques to help clients develop a kinder, more understanding relationship with themselves. Many people struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, or chronic stress experience harsh self-criticism or feelings of shame. Together, we work to increase self-compassion, reduce self-judgment, and build emotional resilience so clients can respond to life's challenges with greater confidence and self-acceptance.
Dialectical Behavior (DBT)
I incorporate Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills to help clients better manage intense emotions, cope with stress, and respond to life's challenges more effectively. Together, we build practical skills in mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness to help clients navigate difficult situations, improve relationships, and feel more confident in their ability to cope.
Motivational Interviewing
Change can feel difficult, even when we know it's needed. I use Motivational Interviewing to help clients explore what's getting in the way, identify what matters most to them, and build the confidence to take meaningful steps toward the life they want.
