Jamilah Jones
I’m Dr. Jamilah Jones, but most people call me Dr. J. I’m a Licensed Professional Counselor and Approved Clinical Supervisor with Brooklyn roots and Trinidadian heritage, and I bring that same straightforward warmth into every session.
You will never feel judged in my sessions, but you also won’t feel stuck.
As a wife, mom, counselor educator, and author, I understand what it means to juggle a lot and still want to show up well for the people you love. My style is collaborative, practical, and judgment free, with a little humor along the way. I draw from CBT, Motivational Interviewing, Family Systems, and Solution Focused therapy to help you feel heard and leave each session with tools you can actually use.
First session
Our first session is an intake, which means I’ll ask a lot of questions about your background, what brought you here, and what you hope to get out of therapy. I’ll be honest with you: this session can feel a little like an interview, and that’s not my usual style. Most of our work together will feel much more like a real conversation. The intake simply helps me understand your story so I can support you in the way that fits you best. You are always welcome to share at your own pace, skip anything you’re not ready to talk about, and ask me questions too. If you’re coming in as a couple or family, I’ll make sure everyone has a chance to be heard. By the end of our first session, you’ll have a clearer sense of what we’ll focus on, how I work, and whether we feel like a good fit. My hope is that you leave feeling a little lighter and more hopeful about what’s ahead.
Strengths
I bring warmth, honesty, and a balance that many clients appreciate. I know when to sit with you and simply hold space, especially when something is painful and you just need to be heard. I also know when to gently push back, ask the harder question, or point out a pattern you may not see yet, because real growth often happens right there. You will never feel judged in my sessions, but you also won’t feel stuck. I combine proven approaches like CBT, Motivational Interviewing, and Family Systems with a down to earth style and a little humor, so our work feels real and practical. My experience working with families in their homes and communities, along with years of training and supervising other counselors, means I can adapt to what you need in the moment and help you leave each session with something you can actually use.
Ideal clients
My ideal client is someone who is tired of just getting by and ready to feel more like themselves again. You might be a parent who feels overwhelmed by your child’s behavior or constant conflict at home, a woman juggling career, marriage, and family while running on empty, or a young adult trying to figure out who you are apart from what everyone expects of you. You may be a couple who keeps having the same arguments, feels disconnected, or wants to strengthen your relationship before things get harder. Or you may be a family hoping to communicate better, rebuild trust, and enjoy being together again. You might be dealing with anxiety, stress, family tension, or a major life transition. Maybe you grew up in a family or culture where therapy wasn’t talked about, and reaching out feels like a big step. You don’t need to have it all figured out. You just need to be open to honest conversations and willing to try something new. If you want a therapist who will listen deeply, tell you the truth with care, and help you build real tools for your life and your relationships, we will work well together.
Treatment methods
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
I use CBT to help you notice the thoughts that keep you stuck and the patterns they create in your feelings and behavior. Together we’ll challenge unhelpful thinking and practice new, healthier ways to respond, especially when anxiety, stress, or self doubt shows up.
Motivational Interviewing
I use Motivational Interviewing when you feel torn about making a change or unsure where to start. Instead of telling you what to do, I help you explore what matters most to you and build the motivation and confidence to take steps that feel right for your life.
Person-centered (Rogerian)
Person Centered Therapy is the foundation of how I work. I believe you are the expert on your own life, so I offer a warm, judgment free space where you feel heard and respected. From there, we work together at a pace that feels right for you.
Solution-Focused Brief Treatment
I use Solution Focused Therapy to keep our work practical and goal driven. Rather than only focusing on what’s wrong, we’ll look at what’s already working, build on your strengths, and identify small, realistic steps that move you toward the life you want.
