Hi! My name is Shakira Miller and I am a board-certified, Licensed Professional Counselor serving Delaware and Virginia. It is my belief that our personal experiences, both good and bad, form our worldview and how we think determines how we feel and behave. If we process those experiences and challenge the negative perspectives, we eliminate the patterns that hinder our growth, and thus change our lives. With 13 years of experience, I have supported adolescents, adults, couples, and families facing various mental health challenges, including depression, anxiety, OCD, bipolar disorder, and PTSD, as well as other social and emotional conflicts.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

In our first session we will discuss the mutual expectations of both therapist and client and initiate the rapport building process, establishing a foundation for your therapeutic journey. I will guide you through a comprehensive assessment processing relevant personal history, important relationships, and current challenges contributing to your discomfort. We will then identify your goals and what you would like to achieve through the therapeutic process. It is my goal from the first session to the last to create a safe, compassionate environment where you feel heard and supported and able to develop the confidence to make the changes necessary to create the life you desire.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

My greatest strength as a provider lies in a combination of empathy, expertise, and lived experience. It is my capacity for empathy that lends to my ability to foster a safe and nonjudgmental space where individuals can explore their vulnerabilities while empowering them to embark on a transformative journey towards healing. With over 13 years of experience in community based mental health service delivery, I have also obtained a wealth of knowledge in trauma informed care, various therapeutic approaches, conflict resolution, and crisis intervention across diverse populations. I also believe that my own personal experiences afford me unique insight into the experiences of my clients that informs and enriches my practice.

Describe the client(s) you are best positioned to serve.

I most enjoy working with motivated adolescents and adults open to personal growth, willing to engage deeply in the therapeutic process, and committed to making positive changes in their life. I work best with individuals that see therapy as a collaborative effort, seeking a supportive space to explore their challenges and work towards their physical, mental, and emotional wellness goals.

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

How we think plays a significant part in how we feel and behave. CBT allows us to explore thinking patterns that hinder our growth and replace them with skills and patterns that support more productive thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. I implement CBT with my clients by using talk therapy to analyze thought processes and identify distorted or irrational thoughts. We them worth together to develop and implement individualized skills that support more healthy, rational ways of seeing and thus engaging your world.

Attachment-based

Attachment theory explores the impact of early relationships and bonds on a person's emotional and psychological development throughout their life. Often times how we connect with ourselves and others derives from those interactions. Together we will understand attachment styles, explore early experiences, process emotions and trauma, and develop and implement skills and mindfulness techniques to promote more secure attachments and create more healthy relationships with ourselves and others.
