I am licensed marriage and family therapist and credentialed alcoholism and substance abuse counselor. My approach is a cognitive-behavioral strength-based approach. I focus on helping people invalidate negative thoughts and become aware of their strengths. I do so in order to help them improve their confidence so that they can overcome challenges that they previously believed were impossible to triumph over. I also help people improve their boundaries to assist them with preventing others from negatively impacting their confidence and interfering with the development of their goals. With couples and families, I use an emotionally-focused approach that helps people become more comfortable with being vulnerable with people that are important to them. Becoming vulnerable helps people focus on discussing how they are impacted by others and what they need from them instead of blaming and criticism. Taking such a stance increases the chance that listeners will remain attentive instead of becoming defensive.
In the first session, clients can expect me to take the time to understand them and their problems. The clients are the experts on their lives and I allow them to teach me everything I need to know. I take this time in order to build rapport and to provide effective support. I allow my clients to start where they are comfortable and move at their own pace.
My strengths as a provider are my patience, humility, respect for my clients, concern for my clients, and my encouragement.
I am very experienced with working with couples and clients that struggle with depression, anxiety, substance abuse issues, and self-esteem concerns. I enjoy working with open-minded individuals that are willing to try new things. I also enjoy working with clients that are enthusiastic and contribute often to the therapy session. It is important for clients to be patient with the process of change.
