(she/her)
Hello! I am Niija McMillon and I look forward to collaborating with you. I’m a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist in California with over 20 years of experience in the mental health and educational fields. Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of supporting children, adolescents, and adults as they navigate challenges such as ADHD, school-related concerns, peer and interpersonal difficulties, low self-esteem, depression, anxiety, and parent-child relationship issues. My approach is grounded in empathy, collaboration, and a strengths-based perspective. Drawing from my extensive experience in assessment and clinical evaluation, I take a holistic view of your assets, unique experiences and challenges to better understand your overall functioning, and areas for growth. Incorporating Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) as well as an integrative framework, I tailor treatment to meet your individual needs. This flexible and adaptive approach allows me to combine evidence-based strategies with a genuine understanding of your personal goals, experiences, and strengths. During your therapeutic journey, I strive to provide a safe and supportive space where growth feels possible and meaningful change can occur. Together, we work to identify unhelpful thought patterns, develop healthier coping strategies, and build on existing strengths to promote self-awareness, confidence, and an overall improved well-being.
Our first session is an opportunity for us to get to know each other and start building a trusting therapeutic relationship. I’ll walk you through the therapy process, explain what to expect, and answer any questions you may have. We’ll talk about the reasons you are seeking therapy, what you hope to achieve, and gather some basic personal information to better understand your background and experiences as we begin working together to set meaningful goals and plan for future sessions. I’ll also review important aspects of therapy, including scheduling and availability, procedures, protocols, and the ethical and legal framework that guides our work, as well as potential benefits and risks. This session is your time to share any questions, concerns, or thoughts you have, that you feel informed, comfortable, and ready to engage fully in the therapeutic process.
I believe that meaningful change begins with feeling seen, heard, and understood. In my work, I strive to meet you where you are, creating a safe and nonjudgmental space to explore life’s challenges at your own pace. My approach is grounded in empathy, thoughtfulness, and collaboration. As such, I see therapy as a shared journey where we work together to uncover insight, strengthen resilience, and move toward healing and growth. My goal is to help you identify what matters most to you and support you in building a life that feels more balanced, authentic, and fulfilling.
I enjoy working with clients who are curious about themselves and motivated to explore the reasons they are seeking therapy. My ideal clients are willing to communicate their thoughts and feelings openly & honestly, allowing us to work together to set meaningful goals and create a plan for moving forward. I work best with clients who are seeking flexible and accessible support while remaining committed to their mental health journey. Therapy can feel difficult at times, and it’s normal to encounter challenges along the way; however, my clients are receptive, willing to engage and trust the process, open to exploring new perspectives, and ready to take active steps toward personal growth, self-understanding, and meaningful change.
Other specialties
I identify as
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help you better understand and manage your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Together, we explore patterns of thinking that may be unhelpful or distorted and look at how these thoughts influence feelings and actions. By bringing awareness to these connections, you can develop practical strategies to respond to challenges in healthier, more effective ways. CBT has been helpful for children, adolescents, and adults, offering tools to build emotional resilience, insight, and lasting positive change.
Acceptance and commitment (ACT)
I use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to help you process and embrace your emotions in a supportive, non-judgmental space. Together, we explore your feelings, clarify what matters most to you, and develop practical strategies for managing social-emotional challenges. ACT helps you build flexibility in how you respond to life’s ups and downs, navigate stress, anxiety, or relationship difficulties, and take meaningful steps toward a life that aligns with your values. This approach is designed to help you grow stronger, more resilient, and better equipped to face life’s challenges while staying true to yourself. This method is particularly effective for helping clients navigate anxiety, depression, stress, relationship challenges, and self-esteem concerns, providing tools for lasting growth and well-being.
Integrative
In my practice, I strive to meet clients exactly where they are; mentally, emotionally, and developmentally. I understand that you are a unique individual, and no single treatment approach can address all of your needs. That’s why I take an integrative approach, combining evidence-based modalities and interventions tailored to your goals, strengths, and challenges. This approach allows you to engage in therapy at your own pace while working toward meaningful, lasting growth.
Psychoeducation
When things feel chaotic or stressful, you might find yourself asking why certain thoughts or feelings keep popping up. As part of therapy, I provide psychoeducation; including clear, relatable explanations about mental health, triggers, and the “why” behind your experiences. Understanding what’s happening helps you feel more in control, validates your experiences, make sense of your emotions, and actively participate in your growth. By gaining insight, you can develop practical strategies, build resilience, and take steps toward meaningful, lasting change.
Solution Focused Brief Treatment
In session, the goal is to assist you with moving forward by focusing on your strengths and the practical steps that can create positive change. Together, we explore what’s already working in your life, set goals that are meaningful to you, and develop strategies to overcome challenges. This approach is designed to empower you, build your confidence, and help you create meaningful change in a way that feels achievable and supportive.
